The Department of Public Health (DPH), Pappas Rehabilitation Hospital for Children (PRHC) is seeking a dynamic Registered Nurse for the Specialty Care Clinics and to serve as a Clinical Nurse Liaison. The selected candidate oversees the Specialty Care Clinics for the Hospital’s specialty consultant physicians (e.g. orthopedics, gastroenterology, podiatry, etc.) who provide care to the hospital’s inpatient population.

Please Note: This position is 40 hours per week, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm. Days off are Sunday and Saturday. This position requires 24/7 "on call " and call back availability.

Duties and Responsibilities (these duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive):

  • Demonstrate and utilize effective leadership and decision-making skills with oversight of the nursing care of patients in the Specialty Care Clinics by insuring the development of an individual plan of care for each patient, by creating daily nursing assignments and delegation of tasks and by providing staff instruction and education to ensure continuity of care
  • Coordinate optimized patient flow in the Specialty Clinics
  • Coordinate the implementation of patient’s individual treatment service as determined by an interdisciplinary team and outline in the individual’s plan, by conferring with physicians, therapies, case management; and may serve as the interdisciplinary team leader
  • Coordinate the clinical and administrative activities of clinics
  • Evaluate nursing activities in the clinics by reviewing patient charts, observing nursing care, and ensuring that nursing care is carried out as directed, and treatment is administered in accordance with physicians’ instructions
  • Identify, evaluate and respond to changes in patients’ conditions and report findings to appropriate health care personnel; initiate necessary follow-up care
  • Perform related duties such as responding to health and safety issues, initiating appropriate actions and preparing and maintaining pertinent documentation in accordance with regulatory and departmental standards
  • Oversee the PRHC Lab collection station including performing lab tasks to prepare specimens for transport to outside Laboratories
  • Perform Specialty Clinic & Inpatient Phlebotomy
  • Coordinate the hospital’s employee health program under the direction of the Director of Specialty Care Clinics. In this capacity, this position oversees the records of new hires, ongoing monitoring of current employees, acute medical events, and seasonal health initiatives
  • Provides specialized clinical and administrative support to the development of Outpatient Services
  • Make appropriate referrals
  • Administer and interpret Tuberculosis tests for patients
  • Ensure patient rights and organizational ethics through informed consent, advanced directives, confidentiality, patient protection team and patient refusal of care for Outpatient clients.
  • Assist medical provider with invasive procedures such as Intrathecal Baclofen Pump refills
  • Assume professional primary nursing duties for patients seen in the Specialty Care Clinics
  • Coordinate and provide clinical support of all Radiology procedures
  • Perform Electro Cardiograms (ECGs) throughout the hospital

Required Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing as well as the services to special client groups such as the mentally, physically, and/or emotionally handicapped.
  • Demonstrated practice of the types and application of emergency medical procedures used such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and tourniquets.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and maintain accurate records.
  • Skilled in giving and following oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Talent for reading and interpreting documents such as physician’s orders and treatment plans.
  • Capacity to interact with individuals who are under physical and/or emotional stress and stressful situations.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects and/or patients with or without an accommodation

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of META , medication dispensing units, and Meditech desired
  • Experienced working with patients with physical and developmental disabilities strongly preferred
  • Phlebotomy experience strongly preferred

Qualifications

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.*
  • Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
