POSITION SUMMARY The Special Education Coordinator ensures that all students receive high quality education that meets their learning needs and goals. He/she provides direct support, guidance, and oversight on key elements related to our special education, social work, and Response to Intervention (RtI) compliance, reporting and management systems. This position is directly responsible for campus based special education compliance, state reporting, data collection, review, and day-to-day challenges that arise. The Special Education Coordinator maintains and improves our systems and procedures related to special education, social work, ELL McKinney Vento, bullying and RtI. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Instructional leader to ensure special education teachers, social workers, and paraprofessionals receive quality feedback, evaluation, and professional development at the campus level;
  • Assist in designing and developing a full continuum of services, as well as support student receiving services in nonpublic placements;
  • Works closely with school leadership to make certain that programs are high quality, effective, and procedurally correct;
  • Direct special education evaluation, reevaluation and annual IEP compliance and timelines;
  • Manage all aspects of documentation pertaining to students with IEPs, including but not limited to:
  • Obtaining complete and updated paperwork for all new students
  • Scheduling and facilitate MDT meetings (annual, tri-annual, eligibility, Student Evaluation Plan, 30-day review, Manifestation Determination Reviews, etc)
  • Ensuring student documentation is in compliance
  • Regularly review special education and RtI data to inform programmatic changes and supports to improve our academic program;
  • Collaborate with the leadership team regarding special education (includes section 504 students), social work, ELL, McKinney Vento bullying and RtI matters;
  • Calculate and report student achievement data scores for special education, ELL and RtI;
  • Collaborate with school leadership to prepare for necessary legal procedures including manifestation reviews, due process cases, or litigation;
  • Observe, provide feedback, and evaluation for teachers, social workers, and other related service providers on an ongoing and cyclical basis;
  • Manage the flow of consistent communication on Special Education issues to Director of Special Education;Assist school based leaders with problem solving around scheduling, hours, and timelines, testing accommodations and procedures as needed;
  • Monitor invoices for related services monthly and calculate overall network spending on related services and serve a liaison for all contracted related services;
  • Ensure completion of state reporting in collaboration with the Director of Special Education;
  • Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers regarding student progress and challenges;
  • Schedule and carry out regular professional development opportunities throughout the year (practitioner specific as well as campus-based trainings);
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE SKILL REQUIRED
  • Master's Degree in related field required;
  • District of Columbia Certification in Special Education required- evidence of progress towards Certification/Licensure acceptable;
  • At least 5 years of successful teaching experience in an urban environment- Washington, DC preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Federal and DCM Regulations regarding special education;
  • Demonstrated management and leadership ability in the following areas:
  • Evaluating exceptional teaching across the special education continuum;
  • Writing/creating reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals consistent with the duties of this position;
  • Presenting information and respond to questions from administrators, staff and other constituents
