Job Description

Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

  • This position requires an employee to be onsite 1-3 times per week

The Role

General Motors and the Global Electrification, Controls, Software & Electronics organization is looking for a System Architect to lead the design, development and launch of architectural solutions in the electrification and electric power domain that will underpin our future innovations across a wide range of technological advancements aligned with the vision for the future in a world in which there are zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.

The System Architect plays a critical role in the organization as they are responsible for describing the solution intent, analyzing technical trade-offs, determining the primary components, guiding critical enablers, and working with product management, customers, and suppliers to help ensure fitness for purpose. They must align key stakeholders across GECSE, coordinate architecture of the various initiatives, determine the optimal architecture to meet technical and business objectives, and deliver tactical plans to the execution team. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working closely with both internal departments and external suppliers. In addition, this position includes a high level of written and oral communication with higher levels of leadership such as directors and executives.

Responsibilities
  • Coordinate the system design execution over the electrification and electric power domain to support multiple product variants within multiple model years and multiple programs.
  • Execute the evaluation oftopology partitioning scenarios and ultimatelyestablish the design direction for the functions set withinthe family of Global Electrical Architectures.
  • Ensure the electrification and electric power subsystem functions and interfaces are defined and designed in adherence to engineering standard work for the purpose of on-time high quality delivery of GM Electrical Architecture Core.
  • Act as a product manager and primary interface with customers (e.g. Subsystems Engineers, Network Design Engineers and Software Engineers) and development partners (e.g. calibration teams, validation teams, or suppliers) over the architecture artifacts; includes tracking and reporting status of deliverables.
  • Oversee and approvecreation ofphysical and logical interface design mechanizations that capture the established direction. Participate in creation of these artifacts as needed to maintain established timelines.
  • Drive alignmentand ensurecompliance withestablishedcore electrical architecture strategies for solutions managed by theglobal component stakeholderswithin the domainarea.
  • Identify opportunities to further optimize the system by repartitioning controls across organizational or otherwise conventional boundaries.
  • Drive discussions to challenge necessary paradigms and develop business cases for realization where appropriate.
  • Lead and support continuous process improvement, best practices, lessons learned, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Provides technical leadership ensuring issue resolution and appropriate technical direction for artifacts of responsibility.
  • Train, coach, mentor other team members in areas of strong competency.

Additional Job Description

Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Math, Physics, or Computer Science
  • 5+ years of experience in electrification systems, embedded controls development, or electrical controls integration (architecture diagrams, designs, and implementation plans)
  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills in job-related area
  • Solid understanding of in-vehicle networks such as CAN and LIN communications
  • Ability to lead global cross-functional teams and organize complex information within softly defined boundaries
  • Appropriate interpersonal styles and communication methods to work effectively with business partners to meet mutual goals required

Desired Skills
  • Master of Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, or Software Engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in electrification system engineering, embedded controls development, or electrical controls integration (architecture diagrams, designs, and implementation plans)
  • Experience with function development within electrification domain
  • Experience with SAFe / Agile Product Development
  • Proven history of troubleshooting capability
  • Knowledge of design, development and test engineering, manufacturing and assembly operations, engineering processes and procedures
  • Experience with safety critical design, testing and validation, e.g. ISO26262
