You will build and head a brand-new Preclinical Histology Core! You will establish the histology expertise, method development, and instrumentation that will serve all of our development programs.

We are seeking an experienced, creative, and motivated Senior Scientist to serve as the Head of Preclinical Histology. In this role, you will build and head a brand-new Preclinical Histology Core that will serve all of our development programs. This role is a unique opportunity to join an early-stage, well-funded Biotech startup. You will report directly to the Chief Technology Officer. This position is full-time with laboratory time being on-site at our facilities located in Cambridge, MA.

Responsibilities:

  • Establish histology expertise, including method development and instrumentation, for the company using both internal and external resources, such as CROs and collaborators
  • Implement standard and novel techniques for histology, histochemistry, microscopy, immunohistochemistry (IHC), and in situ hybridization (ISH) experiments on non-human tissues.
  • Coordinate and perform assays for assessing immunogenicity of implantable grafts
  • Develop novel methods to power exploratory research on explanted tissue grafts
  • Manage image data repositories and work with an interdisciplinary team to enable quantitative analyses and machine learning data mining efforts
  • Train and oversee technicians and scientists internally and externally on new assays, instrumentation and methodologies
  • Plan, direct, and execute tasks across projects according to project timelines and goals
  • Develop protocols, work instructions, test methods, and draft and review technical reports
  • Play a lead role in regular internal project meetings and data reviews
  • Maintain a clear, detailed documentation of all protocols, experiments, and findings

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • PhD in Cell or Molecular Biology, or similar field, with 3-5 years industry experience or MS in a relevant field with 8-10 years industry experience, or equivalent.
  • Several years experience in Histology, Histotechnology, or Pathology required.
  • Expertise in histological techniques such as processing, embedding, sectioning, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and in situ hybridization is required
  • Experience with animal tissue and blood samples is required; working knowledge of vertebrate anatomy, animal phenotyping, and animal model validation a plus.
  • Proficiency in widefield & confocal microscopy as well as slide scanners.
  • Deep understanding of various methodologies to assay for immunogenicity of implants
  • Experience with large animal tissue explants a plus
  • Experience managing teams is a plus
  • Must be able to work and contribute in a highly-collaborative environment on multiple projects concurrently
  • Track record of staying up to date with the latest developments in the field
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced team and able to adjust workload and responsibilities based on changing priorities
