The Senior Scientist in Janssen Biotherapeutics (JBIO) will be part of a team of scientists utilizing a broad spectrum of biophysical techniques to characterize physical attributes of therapeutic assets developed by JBIO, from initial hit generation through lead molecule selection, culminating in the delineation of the biophysical and structural quality of clinical candidates entering the development portfolio. The Senior Scientist is a laboratory-based position that will contribute to this team by conducting forced degradation, solubility, aggregation, and stability studies of candidate molecules as they progress through the discovery pipeline. He/she is expected to design, conduct, and analyze the results of these experiments, as well as represent the biophysics group on project teams within JBIO and in collaboration with the therapeutic areas. This position may also function as a program leader in JBIO.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct high throughput biophysical measurements using NanoDSF, DSC, chromatography (SEC, HIC, IEX), and light scattering (MALS, DLS) instrumentation.
  • Independently interpret and communicate results to program teams and management.
  • Design and implement new techniques and strategies to study the higher order structure and biophysical characteristics of JBIO assets and to optimize the biophysics characterization workflow.
  • Function as a project team representative for the Biophysics group.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in biochemistry, analytical chemistry, biophysics, structural biology, or related fields is required
  • A minimum of 3 years of scientific experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry or specialized academic research post Ph.D. is required
  • Experience characterizing therapeutic proteins and antibodies using a broad array of biophysical and stability experiments with techniques that might include SEC, DSF, DSC, HIC, DLS, cIEF, GXII, and SEC-MALS is required
  • Solid understanding of the fundamentals of antibody structure and function is required
  • Strong leadership experience with highly collaborative instincts is preferred
  • Good written and oral communication skills is required
  • Experience with using and/or designing lab automation and liquid handling systems is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of protein formulation studies to support therapeutic development is strongly preferred
  • Basic knowledge of additional biophysical techniques like mass spectrometry, AUC, or SPR is preferred
  • Successful experience managing and working with contract research labs is preferred
  • This position requires full time presence in our labs located in Spring House, PA, and may require approximately 10% travel.
