Senior Director, Break Through Tech AI Programs Details

Cornell Tech is leading a nationwide initiative called Break Through Tech AI that is a collaboration between higher education institutions and industry partners in selected cities around the country. The mission is to credential and fast-track undergraduate women into careers in Artificial Intelligence. Break Through Tech AI is an expansion of the Break Through Tech initiative which was launched at Cornell Tech in 2016 and is now operating in three cities around the country.

Cornell Tech seeks a Senior Director of Programs who will have leadership responsibility and management oversight for the planning and delivery of all major programs as part of the initiative’s central Program Office. This individual will play a critical role in developing the strategy and operational plans for the program and for leading the oversight of the program in up to 6 cities around the country. The ideal candidate comes with experience leading complex programs with multiple academic and industry partners. More specifically, we are looking for a senior leader with a deep understanding of curriculum innovation, the culture of academic institutions, the culture of the tech industry and nature of tech jobs, and someone who is equally comfortable working in a higher education academic environment as well as collaborating with both corporate and startup executives. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience developing new program concepts as well as operationalizing those concepts at scale. This individual must be able to thrive in a dynamic and continuously evolving environment and be able to independently ‘steer the ship’ to stay on mission. The individual must have experience supervising other employees and growing as well as fostering collaboration among professional peers.

This is a full-time, benefits-eligible 5-year term position with the possibility of renewal.This position requires occasional work on evenings and weekends, particularly during the academic year. The responsibilities may be completed primarily remotely during the initial employment period and would be expected to work on location on our Cornell Tech NYC campus when instruction resumes in person.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Program development and execution for Curriculum Development and Delivery: Lead a partnership between academic leaders and a Learning Management System (LMS) provider to develop and deliver a hybrid online/classroom curriculum in AI/Machine Learning.
  • Program development and execution for Portfolio Creation: Partner with Cornell Tech Studio Leaders to develop a portfolio creation program for undergraduates.
  • Program development and execution for Coaching and Mentoring: Participate in the search, selection and onboarding of a Coaching/Mentoring partner organization that will supply and manage a network of coaches/mentors for our students.
  • Establish partnerships with the local Break Through Tech teams at partner universities around the country: Participate in the search, selection and onboarding of the local teams at partner universities. Establish a program management framework that enables oversight, guidance, reporting, and tracking of activities towards goals.
  • Oversee the development of a network of participating industry and startup players in selected cities: Partner with local Break Through Tech teams and key industry executives in the target cities to develop and expand a network of companies that participate in Break Through Tech programming.
  • Develop and deliver new innovative program ideas
  • Promotion of the initiative on a local and national basis

Senior Program Director has three high-level responsibilities:

  • Develop and oversee the design, development, replication and innovation of Break Through Tech AI programs in multiple cities (60%)
  • Strategic Planning and Development of Program Management Infrastructure to position Break Through Tech AI for the next 3-5 years (20%)
  • Develop and oversee a national platform for the program (20%)


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and 5 to 7 years relevant experience or equivalent combination
  • Extensive experience working in leadership roles in program development and execution in the areas of technology education, curriculum development, training, talent development, internship and/or mentorship programs, and/or student services.
  • Must be able to be to take a leadership role in being a public spokesperson for the program.
  • Must have proven capability to independently lead large scale programs with an emphasis on change management.
  • Must have very strong organizational skills and significant experience in playing a leadership role in planning and executing large academic or corporate programs.
  • Must have a passion for developing mission-driven strategies for programmatic growth and the ability to communicate and ‘sell in’ those strategic plans to academic and corporate leaders.
  • Must be organized, data-driven and detail-driven with a program management orientation around ‘getting the job done’.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and relationship building qualities are essential in order to expand corporate engagement.
  • Ability to communicate with, work effectively with, and maintain a positive rapport with students, professors and corporate leaders alike.
  • Proven ability to work in and lead teams. Highest standards of integrity in order to develop trust with current students, faculty, staff, and employers.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in a related discipline.
  • Work experience leading large programs in an academic and/or corporate environment that have a technology orientation and a talent development/training focus.
  • Specific experience working with both tech faculty and corporate partners. Professional experience in/related to Artificial Intelligence.
