Description This is a part-time, FLSA non-exempt position with the Carson City Fire Department, not to exceed 1,039 hours in any fiscal year. Under immediate supervision, responds to fire emergency calls, assists in wildland suppression, participates in fire prevention and education, pre-suppression activities to include open space and trail maintenance, equipment and facility maintenance, and fire law enforcement activities. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Part-time employees are limited to working no more than 1,039 hours in any fiscal year, July 1 through June 30. Part-time employees are not eligible to receive paid leave (including pay for not working on holidays), PERS retirement, or medical/dental/vision/life insurance. Nevada does not have a state income tax. Part-time employees do not contribute to social security; however, they must contribute 7.5% of their gross pay into a FICA Alternative Plan and are also responsible for paying the 1.45% Medicare tax. Part-time employees are covered under the City’s worker’s compensation program.
This is a Seasonal position and expected to begin in early May 2021. Selected individuals will be hired as either a 1 or a 2 depending on their qualifications.
**This is a grant funded position and as such employees are responsible for knowing abiding by the rules of the grant. This position will continue to be funded as long as the grant is renewed**.
Salary:
Seasonal Firefighter 1: $15.50 - $16.50
Seasonal Firefighter 2: $16.50 - $17.50

Under Immediate Supervision – Incumbents at this level are closely supervised in essentially all aspects of their assigned work with the exception of routine and basic tasks. Work methods are generally prescribed in specific terms. They usually follow an established routine with general assignments, and their work is subject to frequent reviews. A position may involve repetition of a limited number of tasks that after initial training and review warrant only occasional supervisory review.

The employees is regularly required to stand, walk, run, sit and drive; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; frequent exposure to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high, precarious places, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee is exposed to dangerous conditions arising out of direct contact with out of control fires.
Employees are required to pass a physical agility test prior to appointment to the position of Seasonal Firefighter 1 or 2. The physical agility test will consist of the pack test at the arduous level.Supplemental Information
1. Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.
2. This position works variable work hours and an intermittent schedule. As such, this position requires working evenings and/or weekends.
3. This position is an hourly position and must not exceed 1,039 work hours in a fiscal year (July 1st to June 30th).
4. Any City employee may be required to stay at or return to work during emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
5. Employees may be required to complete Incident Command System training as a condition of continuing employment.
6. New employees are required to submit to a fingerprint based background investigation which cost the new employee $56.25 and a drug/alcohol screen which costs $36.50. Employment is contingent upon passing the background and the drug/alcohol screen.
7. Carson City participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each applicant's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.
