POSITION SUMMARY The School Nurse provides daily nursing care as needed, supports health and wellbeing for all students and manages records as dictated by all licensing and regulatory agencies, as well as professional nursing standards. Graduate of an accredited nursing school and maintains yearly state license renewal (RN). Northwest Village School in Plainville, CT Full time. This is a 10 month position. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Interfaces with psychiatry, clinical and teaching staff to ensure that medication and other health related information is disseminated and coordinated in a timely manner.
Identifies potential risk factors and taking measures to reduce those risks in the milieu through reinforcement of positive and safe behaviors, trauma-informed and relationally-based therapeutic interventions, and reporting of suspected child abuse/neglect, according to agency policies and procedures.
Trains and participates in emergency safety interventions authorized and approved by the agency, when a student presents with an imminent safety concern.
Provides vision screenings.
Provides height and weight screenings.
Provides blood pressure monitoring.
Administers medication ordered by physician and authorized by parents.
Must be able to pass a respirator fit test at time of hire and on an annual basis.
Serves as consultant to school personnel and parents in regard to health needs of pupils.
Serves as resource person to classroom teachers in matters pertaining to health instruction.
Assists in the instruction of health education.
Plans and participates in student health appraisals.
Encourages families to provide continuous medical and dental supervision for their children by private practitioners or community clinics.
Establishes follow through procedures to interpret pupil health needs to parents.
Counsels with pupils to develop self-reliance in dealing with personal health problems.
Interprets health needs of pupils to school personnel and parents in assists in developing plans for necessary modification of the school program.
Counsels with parents, pupils, and appropriate school personnel regarding health factors related to school absenteeism.
Assumes responsibility for follow through with parents and school personnel regarding all school health emergencies.
Assumes responsibility for an in-service education program for all school personnel, especially in the areas of first aid and of teacher observation.
Participates in periodic surveys to identify the presence of factors detrimental to health and safety of pupils and staff.
Belongs to and participates in activities of professional education and health associations.
Plans for own professional growth and continuing education.
Continues to develop knowledge and understanding about the history, traditions, values, family systems, and artistic expression of groups served as well as uses appropriate methodological approaches, skills, and techniques that reflect an understanding of culture.
