Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech), located 15 miles northeast of Seattle, is the only public institute of technology in Washington state and has provided high quality education since 1949. The Safety Technician performs routine duties related to the daily operations of the Campus Public Safety office, including but not limited to: safety inspections, security patrols, and assisting with emergency management operations, environmental health and hazard control programs. Monitor, respond to, and record conditions that relate to safety and security. Act as initial point of contact for safety and security issues. Under general supervision, inspect college facilities, equipment, and operations to ensure compliance with college, state, and federal safety standards and codes. This position reports to the Director, Campus Public Safety.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Enforce college safety policies and respond to emergency situations and requests for security assistance
  • Frequently and individually patrol buildings and parking areas to look for undesirable activity and display a security presence; lock and unlock doors as necessary
  • Assist in planning and implementing safety programs for college employees, students, and visitors; advise employees and/or supervisors on requirements for complying with applicable safety codes, standards, and regulations
  • Conduct and document emergency response plans, trainings, and drills; coordinate and communicate with community emergency response agencies, personnel, and college employees about fire and other emergency response activities
  • Document all formal workplace safety inspections and follow up actions that relate to all facilities and equipment; work with custodial and maintenance staff and supervisors to ensure necessary corrective measures are taken in a timely manner
  • Maintain records and write reports on accidents, work-related injuries and safety hazards; draft recommended college response to occupational injury and worker's compensation claims
  • Inspect departmental safety records, SDS inventories, hazmat records, and other locally kept safety information for accuracy and completeness
  • Conduct compliance inspections for parking lot usage; issue and track carpool passes for eligible individuals; track violations using computer software; provide management with information when towing is warranted
  • As trained, conduct proper removal, disposal, and record-keeping for hazardous waste generated by college programs
  • Cut and issue college keys from code or available copy; build cores for new locks; perform upkeep of software-based records system for key issuance
  • Log lost and found items; maintain all security items; distribute found items back to rightful owners and track all returns; ensure proper disposal of unclaimed items
  • Attend safety meetings and communicate with staff as needed to facilitate committee recommendations
  • Other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum high school education or equivalent required; bachelor's degree preferred Demonstrated experience in using Microsoft Office software applications required Previous experience in safety or security work preferred
  • Possess valid Washington state drivers' license Valid 1st Aid/CPR/AED certification
  • Ability to access all areas of the campus, respond to emergencies promptly, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to walk at least 10 miles per day or 50 miles per week

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: Initial salary placement is $3,603-$3,659 per month DOQ; salary placement for current classified employees is per the classified bargained agreement. This is a 40 hour per week position. The typical working hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.- 5:30 p.m. State Retirement Plan; sick leave begins to accrue at the rate of 1 prorated day per month; upon employment. This is a union covered position.
