Your Role and Responsibilities
Has advanced professional knowledge and ability to 1) recognize and properly evaluate potential hazards and 2) help implement comprehensive employee health, safety and well-being controls. Areas of focus include mechanical safety, electrical safety, ergonomics, material handling, chemical safety, construction safety, fire/life safety, exposure assessment and motor vehicle safety. Effectively works with other support organizations and senior line management and assists both employees and managers to understand and measure the value of proactive employee well-being programs.

1. Devises, coordinates and conducts surveys and investigations in complex environments to address employee well-being needs.
2. Develops, within broad objectives, improved employee well-being solutions which involve application of theoretical and practical multi-disciplinary knowledge, experience and creativity.
3. Effectively uses a variety of advanced techniques to evaluate the work environment.
4. Defines goals and technical direction as a member of a multi-functional team. Ensures appropriate coordination with related functions.
5. Evaluates employee well-being trends both inside and outside of the company.
6. Maintains awareness of regulatory and company requirements in addition to professional advancements in area employee well-being disciplines. Actively participates in internal and external (seminars, technical meetings and professional societies) and maintains contact with appropriate standard-setting agencies.
7. Develops, implements and maintains major programs and processes to assist line management.
8. Develops, implements and maintains high quality programs, evaluating existing processes and implementing continual improvement.
9. Reviews and approves design and installation of complex equipment.
10. Helps ensure that facilities comply with safety practices.
11. Properly documents results of work. Prepares technical papers for publication when appropriate.
12. Provides technical and program administration assistance and direction to less experienced personnel.
13. Effectively teams with others to provide employee well-being services and develop/implement new employee well-being initiatives. This includes interaction with other occupational health services professionals regarding wellness programs, medical surveillance programs, etc.
14. Effectively interacts with senior line management

16. Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned.

Contacts can be complex and require negotiation and the ability to compare alternative approaches, influence others and reach specified objectives. Coordinates work with other professionals locally or elsewhere and has contact with all levels of management for the purpose of influencing decisions. Has periodic contacts with representatives from outside organizations for the purpose of exchanging information. Frequent contacts with senior management. Participates in standard-setting activities.
Uses knowledge from several technical disciplines to recognize potential hazards, determine root causes and recommend action plans for complex issues. Ability to understand the business environment and prioritize in a dynamic environment. Utilizes research, observation and both chemical and physical methods for analyzing workplace conditions and ultimately developing appropriate cost-effective solutions.


Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • A Bachelor's degree in safety or occupational health sciences or a closely-related scientific/engineering technical discipline or equivalent.
  • Professional knowledge in the field of safety, industrial hygiene or engineering as evidenced by specialized training & experience or education in areas such as electrical safety, mechanical safety, auditing, ergonomics, toxicology, medical sciences and general hazard recognition.
  • Effective communications required. Contacts can be complex and require negotiation and the ability to compare alternative approaches, influence others and reach specified objectives. Coordinates work with other professionals locally or elsewhere and has contact with all levels of management for the purpose of influencing decisions. Has periodic contacts with representatives from outside organizations for the purpose of exchanging information. Frequent contacts with senior management. Participates in standard-setting activities.
  • Leadership skills required to give technical and administrative direction to others and lead small teams. Has responsibility for helping set and meet organizational mission and interpreting IBM policies and practices in areas of expertise as they relate to employee well-being. Sets own work priorities. Proficient in IBM competencies.
