Virginia Mason is proud to offer our Perioperative 101 training program for nurses interested in the Operating Room. This is a paid training program. Start date for this program is Friday August 27th for new hires. For internal RNs entering the program, the start date will be Monday, September 13th.

Description of new to specialty orientation: Peri-op 101 New to Operating Room Specialty will begin orientation on day shift and working 5 shifts on the unit per week. During this time, the orientee will attend nursing skills labs that are pertinent to their specialty unit. The orientee will also be required to complete online learning modules specific to the area.

Length of orientation: This is a six month training program.

Shift expectations: 8-10 hour days. 4-5 days a week during orientation

Classes/courses: Peri-op 101 is a comprehensive, blended educational program that is: developed by AORN's expert perioperative nurse authors, and based on AORN's latest, evidence-based: Guidelines for Perioperative Practice. This program combines a standardized, evidence-based online curriculum and textbook readings with hands-on skills labs and a clinical practicum. Plus, all Peri-op 101 students receive a 1-year complimentary AORN membership

Nursing Skills Labs include: Sterile technique, Surgical count, Skin Antisepsis, Positioning, Medications and Solutions, Implants, Wound closure and classification, Specimens, Equipment, Documentation, Emergency response, Malignant Hyperthermia, Simulation Lab

Validation sign up info: The orientee will complete any unit required validations as required. Also, the orientee will be required to complete a unit specific competency exam near the end of Peri-op 101 to ensure the orientation has filled any knowledge gaps.


Virginia Mason has 24 Operating Rooms plus a Litho Unit. OR Nurses care for the surgical patient through the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative periods. The OR nurse performs a number of duties, including patient assessment, creating a sterile environment, monitoring patients' mental and physical status, coordination of care, and provision of resources.
The registered nurse provides high quality, skilled nursing services to assist patients to achieve optimum health and functional health status following an illness requiring hospitalization. Through collaboration with physicians and other health care professionals, the nurse prepares the patient and family for discharge to home or another setting for continued care.

Qualifications:

  • A current and valid Washington State Registered Nurse License is required for this position.
  • Recent operating room experience as an RN preferred.
  • CPR certification required every two years or as specified by the work.
