HJF is seeking a Research Assistant III or II to support the Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to MHRP.

Responsible for laboratory organization, communications, equipment monitoring, purchasing, and routine molecular biology, immunology, and flow cytometry experiments. Maintains databases, analyzes primary data, and presents results internally within the laboratory. Provides laboratory and technical support to senior technical staff and will be involved with research and/or development in collaboration with other groups. Solves problems of standard complexity in carrying out research projects in a laboratory environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs laboratory research projects, including collection and organization of data, and maintaining databases. Makes detailed observations on experiments. Provides basic data analysis and interpretation, as directed by supervisor. (40%)
  • Maintains lab reagent and consumable supplies needed to conduct laboratory experiments. Facilitates the necessary administrative and logistic processes to order and receive materials. Maintains lab inventory databases and SOP documentation. (25%)
  • Oversees nonhuman primate vaccine research studies, including preparation of vaccine inoculations, processing of biological specimens, cryopreservation of cell suspensions, and database of specimens. (15%)
  • Maintains temperature sensitive equipment, including administrative settings for alarm notification system. Provides quality control, trouble-shooting and the maintenance of specialized reagents and equipment. (10%)
  • Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures. Ensures the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials. Follows instructions and standard operating procedures to perform expected tasks. May provide basic instruction to other lab staff. (10%)
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques, aseptic tissue culture, flow cytometry, and PCR; ability to follow general instructions; good communication and analytical skills; superb database management skills.

Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field is required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: Research Assistant III: 6-8 years of relevant work experience is required.

Research Assistant II: 3-5 years of relevant work experience is required.

Work Environment: Set in a laboratory work environment.

Background/Security: Must have lived in the U.S. 3 out of the past 5 years; eligible to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/ Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
