Rental Housing Inspector Details

Candidates must have a high school diploma, a valid Michigan Driver's license and at least 2 years of relevant experience. Specialized experience and training in code enforcement in a municipal environment is preferred. Excellent organizational and communication skills are also required. Individuals must be self-motivated and able to work well with the public. Typical responsibilities include:

  • Perform physical inspections of rental housing units
  • Enforce city housing, property maintenance, rental and vacant property registration ordinances
  • Interact with residents, property owners, and business owners to investigate complaints and ensure compliance with all city ordinances
  • Issue citations as needed
  • Participate in court hearings as needed
  • Assist supervisor as needed
  • Maintain excellent client relations
  • Maintain a safe working environment

    In addition, all inspectors providing such Rental Inspection services for the firm must possess the following qualifications and submit evidence of qualifications with Qualifications Proposal:
    • A minimum of five (5) years in governmental property maintenance code enforcement; or
    • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in residential, or rental housing inspections;

      And one or more of the following certifications:
      • Uniform Physical Condition Standards (UPCS) Inspections
      • International Code Council - Property Maintenance and Housing Inspector
      • National Association of Home Inspectors
      • American Society of Home Inspectors
