RECREATION SPECIALIST I / OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME - EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM SITE SUPERVISOR duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Assist with the planning, implementation and supervision of Preschool, Before School, After School, and Summer Activity Center programs for Children ages 2 1/2 - 6 at Virginia Beach Community Recreation Centers and at Virginia Beach Public Schools
- Assist with planning and implementation of special events
- Assist with weekly, monthly and annual statistical reports
- Assist with preparation of required reports, documents, paperwork and promotional materials
- Assist with the purchase of recreation equipment
- Assist with the supervision and maintenance of program areas and inventory of equipment
- Train and supervise part-time employees; provide and/or assist with staff training; assist with staff schedule adjustments
- Maintain daily site visits
- Assist with site coverage
- Serve on various Out-of-School Time Programs Unit, Departmental and City teams and committees
- Work with Inclusion Specialist to provide support to staff in implementing accommodation plans for children with special needs
- Provide quality internal and external customer service
- Maintain a safe environment

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Requires a Bachelors degree in recreation management, therapeutic recreation, exercise science, or a related field; OR any combination of education (above the high school level) and/or experience equivalent to four (4) years in fields utilizing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities and associated with such positions as recreation leader or recreation program supervisor.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be available to work varied hours, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required to meet operational needs.
This is an Alpha I position, which may require reporting to work during periods of emergency or inclement weather, regardless of the City’s operational status.
Required to have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
Must be at least 21 years of age and meet the current minimum program director staff qualifications as listed in the Standards for Licensed Child Day Centers document published by the Virginia Department of Education, Commonwealth of Virginia.

In addition to the minimum requirements, the ideal candidate for this position will have the experience listed in the preferences below. Candidates with the preferred experience should ensure the information is provided in the application.
- Bachelor's degree
- Experience supervising and/or managing an early childhood program
- Experience with direct simultaneous supervision of 2 or more classrooms/sites
- Experience with direct supervision of 3 or more staff to include performance management
- Experience and background working in licensed childcare
- Knowledge and experience working w/children with disabilities/behavioral issues
- Ability to use Microsoft Office products
- Possess a good working knowledge of the Virginia Star Quality Rating System or similar rating system
- Strong leadership ability
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Ability to foster and encourage teamwork at all levels

Our programs operate Monday through Friday, from 6:30 AM – 6:00 PM with occasional weekend work for training and special events. However, this position may work shifts that require the possibility of beginning work at 6:00 AM or ending after the last child is picked up at the end of programs, with the possibility of working split shifts. Additionally, supervisors are expected to be available as needed to meet the needs of staff and customers.
