Plans, organizes, schedules, coordinates and directs comprehensive activity programs and events designed to enhance the mind, body and soul of each of our Memory Care residents. This is to be done by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate staff or other Associates.
Essential Duties and responsibilities:
Include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.
- Know and understand dementia and how residents may be affected by the disease progression and try to anticipate their needs.
- Recognize the psychosocial needs of the elderly.
- Study and analyze resident recreational needs and resources.
- Conducts research and develops short- and long-range goals and objectives.
- Continuously seeks out new activities, events and excursions.
- Know and understand resident’s likes, dislikes, hobbies and interests by ensuring each resident’s life story is completed.
- Try to maximize individual participation in events, while still respecting the resident’s right to privacy.
- Assist with completing the orientation of all new residents and by encouraging them to attend programs that they have enjoyed based on their life story.
- Interprets programs and their philosophy to individuals and groups through personal participation and staff assignments.
- Schedules maintenance and use of Activity Rooms, kitchen, company vehicles (with the assistance of maintenance) and all of the equipment necessary for the departments use.
- Prepare a stimulating and interesting activity program represented by an attractive, monthly activity newsletter/ calendar.
- Decorate all common areas of the Community appropriately and adequately in advance of all monthly holidays to efficiently promote anticipation, enthusiasm and participation of the Residents.
- Schedules a wide variety of activities and events that reflect the seasons of the year and the interests and temperament of the residents. The program should always provide residents with a challenge, yet never be demeaning.
- A variety of activities are required. The program must provide programming in the 6 programming components on a regular basis: Educational, Sensory, Wellness, Spiritual, Community, and Creative.
- Ensure that all residents receive greeting cards and notes on special occasions. Birthdays get wells and anniversaries are examples.
- Ensure that all supplies and or equipment are put away appropriately, immediately following the completion of any activity.
- Monitor the Activity Rooms to ensure that they are organized and neat at all times.
- Coordinates all transportation needs, including driving as necessary for outings.
- Develops and maintains relations with other recreation providers in community.
- Observe work environment for potential injury hazards and take appropriate preventative safety precautions.
- Manage all signup sheets for outings and scenic drives by taking into consideration elopement risk, number of wheelchairs and staff to accompany resident’s to the restroom.
- Be informed and responsible for the monthly activity budget and ensure that expenditures are within the budget.
- Submit to the Executive Director and Home Office accountant in a timely manner, all check requests necessary to carry out the Community’s activities. These activities may be performed on a weekly or monthly basis, depending upon the needs of the Community and direction received from the Executive Director.
- Purchase any needed supplies or vendors using appropriate purchasing method provided by Home Office and Executive Director.
- Understands and maintains Quality Assurance standards in the Memory Care Program.
- Keep current on regulations of Title 22, which pertain to the department.
- Manage the Volunteer Program.
- Prep all programs that will not be run by you and assign them to the appropriate staff to run them.
- Ensure programs are created to engage resident’s at all levels of the disease progression.
- Provide parallel programming whenever possible.
- Able to evaluate resident needs, supervise other employees, and train volunteers.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Directly supervises Programming Assistant and any volunteers in the Memory Care Department.
- Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
- May perform daily payroll edits. Adjust payroll records as appropriate. Perform end of period review.
- Observe work environment for potential injury hazards and take appropriate preventative safety precautions. Actively participate in prevention, reporting, and management of Workers’ Comp. Claims.
- Able to read and write reports, business correspondence, memos and staff performance evaluations.
- May manage staff schedules.
Qualifications:
- Communication Skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
- English is the primary language used in the Community, and command of this language is required by California State requirements.
- Interact well with our Carlton Family – residents, family members, all staff members, future residents.
- Reasoning Ability
- Ability to apply common sense understanding and carry out written or oral instructions.
- Deal with resident requests and complaints in a professional and timely manner, with sensitivity, compassion and a positive attitude.
- Follow through on requests and complaints or make certain that that the Associate responsible for resolution has followed through.
- Make every effort to ensure resident comfort and satisfaction with services provided by the community.

- Education and Experience
- College degree in related field is preferred
- Experience working with seniors.
- At least one year of experience in conducting group activities is necessary.
- Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
- Publisher Pro or current software to produce
- According to Title 22 requirements, employee must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
- Mathematical Skills
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs
- Certificates, License, Registration
- A Class B driver’s license is required but may be acquired after hire (Note: MUST be obtained within 90 days of hire date).
- RCFE Certification is desirable and may be obtained after employment begins.
- Current First Aid Certification (obtained through community)
- DOJ and FBI fingerprint clearance must be completed prior to working in community (obtained through community)
- Health screening and negative TB test, must be less than six (6) months old. (obtained through community)
