Coater Process Engineer
The Process Engineer has authority and responsibility for establishing and maintaining process conditions and coating formulations for new and existing products. Direct hands on experience with coater equipment is required! This position works in conjunction with all areas of production and quality testing. This position works in partnership with R&D on existing products, product modifications and new products to evaluate process capabilities and recommend manufacturing line selection to achieve the optimal process and product quality.
He/she will be responsible for providing day-to-day guidance and technical support to the line, ensuring that operation personnel are well trained on scientific principles/procedures that directly support production. The Process Engineer will help troubleshoot issues and drive adherence to quality standards. Through statistical techniques, root cause analysis and sound engineering principals the ideal candidate will analyze data and drive fact-based decisions.
Responsibilities:
- Lead development of Technical Data Packages for Process and Product Development Trials. This will include developing Process Specifications, Raw Material Specifications and Process Operating Conditions.
- Lead, document and make recommendations on Plant Trials. Use Design of Experiments techniques for multi-variable trials or equivalent. Drive the use of logic and ensure repeatability.
- Serve as the process lead on projects, contributing process knowledge for sound decisions.
- Review new formulations to verify processing capabilities.
- Act as a liaison between R&D, quality and manufacturing to confirm first runs are successful.
- Lead operation of equipment/processes including dispensing, mixing and coating processes.
- Ensure the gravure cylinder inventory is adequate and the cylinders or sleeves and impression rolls are properly maintained.
- Develop process conditions and train operators to achieve outstanding quality, process control and equipment uptime.
- Provide day-to-day technical support. Troubleshoot coater quality issues on coater to include, but not limited to, monitoring of web, coating stations, unwind and pull roll stand.
- Implement, maintain, and improve the documented quality system.
- Develop and implement control plans for the process, including Transition Plans, Plan Limits and Product Quality Plans.
- Help develop and manage the system for inspection of incoming materials.
- Drive the use of scientific principles throughout the organization.
- Capable of applying engineering fundamentals to practical problem solving and develop and optimize robust product specifications to meet customer and regulatory requirements.
- Keeps up to date with current and developing trends in coating industry.
- Must monitor and measure process performance daily. Responsible for improving quality, waste, efficiencies and output.
- Driving adherence to our Quality System throughout the process.
- Strong documentation of trials, test and/or deviations from Standard Operating Conditions and process changes is required.
- Dedicated to improving safety and quality in all areas.
- Establish and maintain documented work instructions for process optimization and control standards.
- Manage production runs with new products and optimize process to achieve product quality requirements and maximum production throughput.
- Works to safeguard proprietary information and equipment.
- Manage the system for control on non-conforming product.
- Support training efforts on the science behind the process.
- Drive control charting of key product properties and process variables.
- Support communication of customer feedback and needs to the organization.
- Track, analyze, and provide reports for process improvement efforts.
- Identify key opportunities for improvement based on data analysis.
- Provide routine technical training to Operations personnel as needed.
- Provide and analyze data in response to process deviations, process incidents, quality incidents and returns.
- Maintain an analysis of process rejects and identify improvement programs.
- Maintain high housekeeping standards in all areas of operations.
- Performs other related duties as required and assigned.
Requirements:
- BS in Engineering or related business disciplines is required
- Solid background and experience in thin film coating of wide webs is required
- Start-up line experience is preferred
- 5 to 10 years of related manufacturing is preferred
- Strong communications and teamwork skills, with all levels, are a must
- Excellent leadership skills
