Whole Life Engineering Directorate: is a member of the systems engineering organization. The main objective of Whole Life Engineering is to influence hardware, software, and systems throughout all phases of a system’s life cycle to assure effective operation, reliability and economical ownership by the customer and end users.

System Safety Engineering is a Department of Whole Life Engineering: The System Safety department sets system requirements, analyzes the design, assesses test data, reviews operating and maintenance manuals, and assess risk by way of hazard analyses, and software and firmware safety programs. System safety provides assurance to our employees, the customer and end users that our products safely perform their required mission functions throughout their lifecycle while meeting overall cost and schedule requirements.

The System Safety Department is a stable, employee-focused team operating in a dynamic, change-oriented environment. We methodically analyze missile and defense programs at a component and system level to identify, eliminate or mitigate hazards, As a member of the team, you’ll collaborate across departments, including Engineering, Environmental Health & Safety, Supply Chain, Operations, Test & Integration and Production.

As a PrincipalSystems Safety Engineer, your general responsibilities will include:
  • Analysis of engineering hardware and electrical drawings and schematics assessing for fault tolerance, latent hazards, and safety requirements compliance
  • Work with test and tactical operating and maintenance procedures to assure the proper administrative controls are in place
  • Work across all integrated product teams and lines to properly eliminate hazards or provide effective controls.
  • Collaborate with Program Management and government approval authorities from program startup through production to demilitarization and disposal.

Key Responsibilities will include:
  • Perform MIL-STD-882E System Safety Program tasks and analyses, or customer’s approved equivalent
  • Design Analyses, Influence, and Verification via conduct of fault tree analyses, hazard analyses, sneak circuit analyses, and software and firmware safety analyses
  • Manage one large system safety program or multiple mid-sized safety programs to include:
    • Monitoring program technical execution, interfacing with stakeholders (e.g. customers, program offices, subcontractors, vendors, etc.), performing Earned Value Management, and Systems Engineering tasks
    • Effectively managing the System Safety Program and tasking of personnel as assigned
    • Mentoring Jr. Engineers in the field of System Safety
  • Gaining Customer Safety Approval for Test or Deployment
    • Preparing Safety Assessment Reports and Safety Program Briefs for Customer Approval
    • Briefing safety of the program at technical reviews and as part of the safety approval process
  • Interpretation of system requirements, customer specifications and military standards to have appropriate safety requirements for hazard mitigation or elimination approved
  • Preparation of internal and customer reports describing various analyses relevant to the System Safety program
  • Collaborating across multiple disciplines to gain a full understanding of product architecture and design

    This position requires the eligibility to obtain a security clearance. Except in rare circumstances, only US Citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

    Required Skills:
  • 8+ years in the field of: System Safety Engineering; Energetics, Explosives, or Propellant Safety; or Battery Safety; or Software or Firmware Engineering; or equivalent Safety Engineering Experience (e.g. Aerospace Safety, Automotive Safety, or Medical Device safety engineering)
    • 6+ years of experience in the aforementioned areas along with a relevant Master's Degree may be considered for this job
  • Experience with hazard analysis, e.g. software safety, firmware safety, Fault Tree analysis, failure diagnosis or corrective action recommendations
  • Team leadership experience
  • US Citizenship is required

    Desired Skills:
  • Experience in Rocket Motor Ignition Systems and Fuzing Systems safety requirements and qualifications testing programs (MIL-STD-1901A, MIL-STD-1316 and JOTP-052)
  • Experience presenting safety program to management and approval authorities
    • Highly desired: Experience with Department of Defense Safety Review Boards (eg.) Software System Safety Technical Review Panel; Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board; Fuze and Initiation System Technical Review Panel; Department of Defense Explosives Safety Board; Non-Nuclear Munitions Safety Board
  • Experience with DoD System Safety Programs
  • Strong written, oral and presentation skills
  • Strong interpersonal and project management skills, with the ability to manage a safety program and provide direction to supporting safety personnel
    • Highly desired: Experience with application of Emotional Intelligence® concepts, and techniques
  • Master’s Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM); Desired: ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard



    Required Education: BS in a STEM discipline or BA in Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics or Chemistry
