Job Description
General Summary:
The Computational Genomics Principal Research Scientist collaborates with cross-functional project teams to design studies, analyze and interpret large-scale genomics data, and communicate results that will have a critical impact on the development of cutting-edge, transformative therapies. The incumbent is self-reliant with a formidable record of accomplishments, independently identifying and solving tough problems repeatedly, across a number of critical and diverse projects. The incumbent will innovate pro?ciently and generate insights that in?uence research strategies. Incumbent should be regarded as an emerging expert in a ?eld of research, providing reliable, valuable advice to other research Project Teams on a regular basis. The incumbent will exhibit an ability to make signi?cant conceptual contributions.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Designs and performs sophisticated, technically challenging work, ef?ciently and independently
- Generates effective hypotheses to pursue Project goals and set new experimental directions
- Identi?es broad implications to ?ndings, which transcend the immediate experiment
- Develops novel and creative solutions to overcome Project goal obstacles
- Performs advanced, complex experimental troubleshooting and methods development, and is routinely called upon to use this prowess to assist others outside of own Projects
- Makes substantive conceptual contributions to Project activities and scienti?c strategies
- “Imports” new principles/concepts from other ?elds to establish new progress in Projects
- Coordinates publication and/or patenting of ?ndings, or is a major contributor to these processes
- Provides authoritative, technical recommendations broadly within the company regarding own ?eld/discipline, and often occupies a key or pivotal formal or informal Project role
- May be the practical manager of CRO contracts or external collaborative research
- Performs other duties as assigned
- May supervise other Research staff
Knowledge and Skills:
- Deep knowledge in the analysis, visualization, and interpretation of genomic and next-generation sequencing (NGS) data
- In-depth scientific understanding of gene editing, the role of genetic variation in human disease, molecular biology, and cellular biology
- Expertise with applying computational methods and bioinformatics tools to large-scale data
- In-depth understanding of statistics
Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) in computational biology, bioinformatics, human genetics, genomics, systems biology, bioengineering, or a related field, and 4-7 years of productive, relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or
- Master's Degree (or equivalent degree) in similar fields, and 7+ years of productive, relevant employment experience, or
- Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent degree) in similar fields, and 10+ years of productive, relevant employment experience
- Typically requires 7 years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience
- A superior communicator, demonstrating the ability to write advanced technical documents and demonstrating con?dence and versatility in presenting verbally to diverse audiences
- Demonstrates advanced judgment, balancing technical feasibility and scienti?c opportunity/impact
- Regularly executes technically challenging, complex experiments successfully within project expectations
- Discerns new, productive paths in experiments with great regularity
- Demonstrates initiative and ability to capitalize on scienti?c creativity and insights
- Assigned to the more challenging or higher-value Project tasks/problems
- Demonstrates outstanding determination and/or persistence in supporting Project(s)
