Principal Internship AND/OR Pre-qualified Principal List (January 4, 2021 - February 1, 2021)
Job Specific Information: Applicants will be asked to select one of the following three choices when applying on Careers: Pre-Qualified Principal and Principal Internship, Pre-Qualified Principal only, or Principal Internship only. Principal candidates and interns are selected using a multi-phase process which carefully considers the applicant's experience and readiness for a principalship. The first step includes a paper screening process of all the documents requested. Incomplete applications cannot be considered. The second phase is a multi-step interview process which includes job-embedded tasks and a panel interview. If applicants successfully complete the second phase, they will be entered on a list of pre-qualified principal candidates who are then eligible to apply to school principal vacancies, OR will become principal interns paired with principal developers.
Pre-qualified principal candidates who are selected to interview for specific school principal vacancies will participate in a community interview beginning in the Spring 2021. Selected finalists will then interview with the superintendent.
Eligible candidates for either position must have:
- A thorough knowledge of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) policies and procedures, the Call to Action Plan, the Program of Studies, and state and federal regulations and laws.
- Thorough knowledge of curriculum, instruction, organizational patterns, school operations, and pupil services.
- Demonstrated competence in staff selection, training, supervision and evaluation.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and demonstrated ability to act effectively under stress.
- Ability to motivate, encourage, and work with staff to ensure outstanding performance as well as good morale.
- Ability to articulate a vision for teaching and learning through leading the School Improvement Process (i.e. data review, root cause analysis, establishing an instructional focus, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to be a highly effective instructional leader through a commitment to equity and excellence for all students.
- Ability to lead an instructional program that promotes high expectations and access to rigorous and relevant learning.
- Demonstrated commitment to the instructional program through effective implementation of the professional growth systems with fidelity.
- Shown to be highly reflective on his/her practices.
- Some experience of union collaboration to address school needs.
- Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills.
- Successfully completed the Maryland license examination.(Admin I), or its equivalent in another state.
- Met or exceeded the PGS standards as an Assistant Principal.
Note: Evidence to show the impact of the candidate’s leadership in the above competencies should be specifically referenced in the resume, letter of interest, and recommendation letter. These competencies should also be evident in the artifact uploaded with your application submission.

Application Checklist:
- Log on to MCPS Careers and select “Current Employees.” Apply to “Principal Internship / Pre-qualified Principal List” and attach your letter of interest (two pages maximum) addressed to Dr. Helen Nixon, associate superintendent, Office of Human Resources and Development (OHRD). The letter must include evidence to support your proficiency in the bulleted competencies listed above, data and concrete examples to support your claims, and an example of your work in two areas:
- An example of how your leadership has impacted student achievement, and
- An example of how you have built teacher capacity that resulted in improved teaching and learning experiences for students.
- Include your current position in your Careers profile.
- Letter of Interest with the impact of your leadership clearly evidenced and aligned to the competencies
- Updated resume with the impact of your leadership clearly evidenced and aligned to the competencies
- Recommendation letter from your current supervisor (SENT DIRECTLY TO adminstaffing@mcpsmd.org) that includes the following
- details pertaining to the impact of your leadership as outlined in the competencies
- specific information regarding the impact of your leadership on student achievement and teacher capacity
- data and concrete examples demonstrating your impact
- Evidence of your master's degree
- Scanned copy of your MSDE Administrator II certification (or the comparable certificate for your state), EVEN IF THE MCPS CERTIFICATION OFFICE HAS A COPY
- Two years successful experience as an assistant principal
- ONE current artifact demonstrating evidence of effective leadership and aligned to the competencies

A special note for current MCPS employees: If an official transcript conferring an additional degree and/or admin certification have not already been submitted to the MCPS Certification Unit, please do so now.
We will not obtain certificates or evidence of degrees from the certification office.
