Job Description

1. Job Overview

The Primary Tech supports and assists in the operations of the Primary Dept. The position includes advance preparation for operational needs and keeping the machines stocked. The Primary Tech supports the department, performing operator duties and ensuring that the overall quality of work produced meets product specifications. This position also has Hazardous Waste duties as noted below.

2. Job Dimensions

The Primary Technician supports and assists the operations of the Primary Department.
Primary Technician appropriately understands and follows the plant’s EHS (Environmental, Health and Safety) and Quality systems to maintain a safe workplace and ensure quality product.

3. Principal Accountabilities

Operate lifting equipment (i.e. hoists and forklifts).
Responsible for reading & interpreting specifications and manufacturing instructions.
Responsible for thorough and accurate documentation to maintain traceability.
Always maintains a clean and safe working area.
Completes required paperwork, including housekeeping checklist, miscellaneous inspections, batch tickets, etc.
Assists with machine set ups and ensures compliance with job specifications.
Works proactively; assuring that the work area is supplied properly for the next operation.
Understands, adheres to and reinforces Environmental, Health, and Safety policies and regulations.
Responsible for the proper handling and labeling of Hazardous Waste drums on the production floor, staging, and transport to the Hazardous Waste Cage.
Anticipates and reacts productively to changes and handles other tasks as assigned.
Seeks and implements improvement activities through teamwork and participation in the Continuous Improvement process.
Understands and complies with grounding and bonding procedures.
Follows all safety rules and proper chemical handling processes.
Assists in training other personnel.
Provides communication daily with management, maintenance, operators, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.

6. Qualifications/Requirements

6.1 Formal Qualifications and Experience

Knowledge and Experience

One or more years of experience in rotogravure printing and/or adhesive and extrusion lamination and coating.
Prior training in web handling / winding preferred.
General knowledge of computers preferred

Education and Certifications

High School Diploma or GED
Fork Truck Certification preferred

6.2 Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Behaviours

Ability to read and understand manufacturing instructions.
Ability to operate or learn to operate a forklift.
Ability to read layouts and/or drawings.
Attentive to details.
Skilled in or able to learn safe operation of listed tools and equipment:
Drum Dolly, Shafts, Densitometer, Mixers, Air Pumps, Grinders, Lathes, Lifts and Hoists
Clear understanding of fine measuring tools. (i.e., rulers, tape measure)
Proficiency with computers and the ability to learn and use new programs.
Math skills equivalent to high school level for calculating formulas and measuring products.
Good mechanical aptitude.
Ability to work with flammable materials and rotating equipment safely at all times. Aware of risk and continually uses caution.
Willingness and ability to obtain and stay current with Hazardous Waste handling and labelling requirements.
Stay current on required training requirements and training records associated with Hazardous Waste duties.
Effective interpersonal skills in a team-based environment.
Effective oral and written communications skills.
Ability to see accurate colors.
Ability to speak, read, and complete reports accurately in English.

6.3 Physical Demands

Work requires physical strain such as long periods of standing and walking in the production facility and lifting of heavy items.

Ability to manipulate rolls weighing up to 1600 pounds suspended from a hoist into a suspension rack throughout shift.
Ability to manipulate cylinders weighing up to 400 pounds suspended from a hoist into various work stations or trolleys
Ability to move 300-400 lb drums with a drum dolly throughout the shift.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs throughout the shift.
Ability to lift a 90lbs. shaft/core combination with assistance from another employee multiple times per shift.
Ability to work in various awkward positions high and low with outstretched arms cleaning idlers and rollers on powered-down machinery.
Other physical demands include crouching and reaching.

6.4 Work Environment

The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts requiring special safety precautions that are normally encountered when working around moving machines in production facilities.

Protective clothing or gear such as hearing protection, safety glasses or goggles, gloves, bump cap and safety shoes are required.
The employee will occasionally be exposed to solvent fumes and flammable liquids. Working with these chemicals possess a risk of fire or explosion from an ignition source, therefore Static Dissipating (SD or ESD) safety shoes are required.
The employee will occasionally be required to go outside up to four times per shift.
The employee will occasionally be required to work on a catwalk approximately ten feet high.
The employee will be required to work near fast moving equipment with nip points and rollers that require caution.
