Temporary RNs are needed for a 90-day assignment as part of UPMC’s SWAT (“Supplemental Work and Transition”) team; this assignment is specific to Psychiatric Care/Behavioral Health nursing.

The SWAT nurse role is utilized to provide clinical support to clinical areas throughout all UPMC facilities that have a high need for supplemental staffing. Our largest area of need for behavioral health nurses is currently at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital in the Oakland area of Pittsburgh (however, we also have behavioral health services through most UPMC hospitals).

Responsibilities:

  • Performs point of care testing per unit (i.e., glucose monitoring, urinalysis, Hemocults.)
  • Adheres to Nursing Standards and Policies including ANA Standards for Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, ANA Professional Code for Nurses, the WPIC policies and procedures and the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Good clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care. Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead in application of the nursing process.
  • Performs a nursing assessment and initial plan of care within 8 hours of patient's admission.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of DSM IV diagnosis as evidenced by individual, group and milieu therapeutic interventions.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated competence in professional nursing practice.
  • One year nursing experience required.
  • Must be able to pass all UPMC required testing for Registered Nurses.
  • SWAT Nurses must agree to be available to work 80 hours in a bi-weekly pay period, including but not limited to: day, night, weekend and holiday shifts. SWAT nurses will be willing and able to report for work at all UPMC facilities.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. NIH/NIHSS required within 60 days of hire.

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support
  • Basic Life Support or Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation
  • Certified National Institute of Health Stroke or National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification
  • Registered Nurse

  • Act 33 Child Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance with Renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance
