Position Summary: Procurement of blood samples (venous and capillary). The lab hours for this position are M-F 0800-1700.
Accountabilities/Essential Job Functions:
- Performing venipuncture/capillary sticks according to provider order
- Maintain communication with providers to ensure completeness of requisition (provider signatures, ICD 10 codes etc)
- Register patients: to include obtaining/copying all required insurance/photo ID documentation to be scanned into patient’s EMR at SVH.
- Processing samples: preparation of samples for transportation to SVH and/or per reference lab specifications if required to send-out from SVH.
- Ensuring that patients are added to the Fax Log or auto fax is activated (when again available) to ensure delivery of results to provider when complete.
- Maintaining supply inventory and forwarding supply requests to SVH for replenishment as needed.
- Result look-up and intervention should providers not receive results as planned.
- Relief phlebotomist orientation/training
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Education/Training:
Phlebotomists will have:
- Completed an educational training program which consists primarily of hands-on training. This training generally includes safe handling and collection of venous blood samples as well as skin puncture techniques.
- the ability to qualify for MA Phlebotomist certification in Washington State
- have recent phlebotomy experience
Experience: Must prove competency in the collection of venous and capillary blood samples
License/Certification: Phlebotomist

It is necessary:
- to be proficient in venipuncture
- to possess good interpersonal skills when relating to patients and fellow staff members; to be able to work with a diverse patient group, treating all patients and staff with respect and consideration
- to have the ability to perform various clerical duties
- to possess knowledge of safety procedures
- to always look professional; Royal blue scrubs are required and shoes should be appropriate
- good driving record

- Ability to meet the physical requirements to perform associated lab tasks
