Phlebotomist (part time-casual status)

EDUCATION: GED or High School Diploma is required.
EXPERIENCE: Phlebotomy related or training as a medical assistant or equivalent is preferred.
CERTIFICATE, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Certification as a phlebotomist by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) upon or within 12 months of employment is required.
PRIMARY JOB DUTIES:
- Adheres to Mary Lanning Healthcare’s Mission, Vision and Values.

- Assembles equipment such as: tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, alcohol wipes, etc., as needed for performing blood draws or other specified tests / procedures.
- Verifies and or records identity of patient before doing blood draw procedure; converses with patient to explain procedure and to reduce any anxiety as appropriate.
- Applies tourniquet to patient's arm, locates accessible vein / artery to collect blood specimen through arterial or veni-puncture as appropriate or by capillary collection from finger stick; swabs puncture site with antiseptic and inserts needle into vein or artery to draw blood into collection tube, bag, etc.
- Withdraws needle, applies appropriate treatment to puncture site and labels and stores container for subsequent processing.
- Processes specimens for analysis.
- Utilizes appropriate registration pathways to place provider orders.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development and the skills necessary to provide age specific and appropriate care of the patient according to their age category, especially for neonate, pediatric and geriatric patients; interprets data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's age specific needs consistent with the care of the patient.
- Communicates with department director, medical technologists, other hospital staff as needed to provide patent care as required.
- Cleans phlebotomy tray, drawing room, etc., as required.
- Maintains supply inventory, appropriate files, phlebotomy cabinet as required.
- Performs clerical related duties as needed.
- Attends and participates in departmental meetings / inservices, Mary Lanning Healthcare quality improvement program, etc.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
