GENERAL STATEMENT/OVERVIEW:

The iCMP Pharmacy Technician Specialist supports the mission of the Integrated Care Management Program (iCMP), which is designed to improve the quality and efficiency of care for the chronically ill patient population by providing robust care management to patients with BW/F primary care physicians.

Under the direction of the iCMP pharmacist, and in close collaboration with the iCMP Care Team, the iCMP Pharmacy Technician Specialist is responsible for ensuring timely medication access and optimizing medication adherence for the iCMP patient population. This will include obtaining patient insurance information, collaborating with retail pharmacies, and providing outreach to patients and their caregivers for insurance education. In addition, the Pharmacy Technician Specialist will assess patients’ medication management systems and identify barriers to adherence. Working closely with the iCMP Pharmacist and iCMP Care Team, the Pharmacy Technician Specialist will develop a plan to reduce barriers, involve adherence tools, and provide ongoing compliance checks.

The iCMP Pharmacy Technician Specialist will take an active role in advancing program goals and initiatives related to pharmacy and medication access. This will include staying current with patient support programs, proactively identifying underinsured patients, and exploring methods to minimize future pharmacy issues.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilize Pharmacy Benefit Manager programs to administer pharmacy benefits, including the ability to resolve rejected claims due to coverage issues such as prior authorizations, formulary status, eligibility, etc. for iCMP patients.

  • Counsel iCMP patients on procedures of obtaining prescriptions, generic medications, prior approval requirements, insurance procedures, and other medication related issues as needed.

  • Collaborate with and receive referrals from iCMP Pharmacist to identify problems related to medication access and to resolve these issues prior to discharge.

  • Collaborate with iCMP Care Team to assess patient medication management systems and develop a plan to reduce barriers, involve adherence tools, and provide ongoing compliance checks.

  • Assist Medicare beneficiaries with the Medicare Plan Finder Tool during Open Enrollment.

  • Utilize excellent interpersonal skills when communicating with patients, families, and physicians, in order to develop rapport, build trust, and engage patients in person and over the phone.

  • Utilize Epic system for all documentation related to iCMP patients and communication with the iCMP care team.

  • Participate in iCMP weekly Care Team Operations meeting; educate iCMP care team staff on industry trends as relevant, including formal presentations at Care Team Operations meetings as needed.

  • Maintain knowledge of current industry trends as they pertain to Pharmacy Benefit Management.

  • Handle confidential information in compliance with HIPAA guidelines.

  • Lead both departmental and hospital-based quality improvement projects in collaboration with the iCMP Pharmacist.

  • Carry out duties and responsibilities as assigned by iCMP Pharmacist.

  • As required by State regulations, wears a name tag with the individuals name and title "Certified Pharmacy Technician.”

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Two years previous hospital experience as a Registered Pharmacy Technician II or 2 years’ experience in a retail pharmacy setting with emphasis on resolving insurance issues.

  • Excellent command of medical terminology, medical abbreviations and computer technology is required.

  • Experience in dealing with Manufacturer PAP programs a plus.

  • Must be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.

  • Must maintain the title Certified Pharmacy Technician with a nationally recognized certificate from an accredited certifying organization or be a registered Pharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.

  • Must complete annual Continuing Education credits as required by the certifying body to maintain Certification.

  • Upon departmental orientation and annually thereafter, must complete annual hospital required training.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

  • Satisfactory command of the English language.

  • The ability to read, interpret and follow complicated verbal and written instructions with accuracy, precision and dependability.

4. Must have a thorough understanding of how Pharmacy Benefit Manager (PBM) programs administer pharmacy benefits, including the ability to resolve rejected claims due to coverage issues such as prior authorizations, formulary status, eligibility, etc.


5. Must be able to work accurately under stress with time constraints.


6. Excellent communication skills including the ability to converse directly with patient, physician, and other healthcare providers in person or over the phone.


7. Ability to perform in a professional and courteous manner and maintain excellent working relationships with Physicians, Nurses, Pharmacists and other health professionals.


8. Excellent initiative and self-motivation to complete work with a minimum of supervision.


9. Complete understanding of medical terminology, abbreviations computer operation and systems

10. Time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks under time constraints.


11. Ability to organize and maintain efficient work areas and services.


12. Ability to make decisions based on knowledge of procedural requirements of the work in conjunction with specific skills and abilities of the technician.


  • Ability to distinguish routine functions from those requiring a Pharmacist's professional judgment.

  • The ability to work unselfishly as an integral member of a team whose primary responsibility is to ensure access to medications.
