SUMMARY:

Peer counselors work with individuals in services to provide hope, encouragement, support, self-determination, and connection to the community. Peer counselors plan and implement support and community-based activities for individuals in services and report progress or special problems to the peer coordinator or agency supervisor. Transportation of clients using a 15-passenger van required. Peer Counselors must be a person with lived experience who has met the criteria for a diagnosable mental, behavioral, substance abuse or emotional disorder at some point in their adult life.

EXPERIENCE:

Education: High School Diploma/GED required.

Licensure: Valid driver’s license with "F" endorsement in Tennessee. No endorsement required in Virginia.

Certification: Within one year of hire, must obtain Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) certification from the Tennessee Dept. of Mental Health or Virginia Department of Health Professions.

Experience: Past/present utilization of mental health or substance use disorder services required.

Knowledge/Skills: Verbal/written communication skills.

EQUIPMENT:

Computer, fax, GPS, copier, 15-passenger van and any other equipment required to perform the functions of the position.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assist in implementing/creating a recovery environment

2. Maintain accurate attendance and participation records.

3. Share progress and barriers with other staff providers, as applicable.

4. Provide transportation for individuals using services in 15-passenger van.

5. Organize and lead peer support activities and groups.

6. Attend and participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings, in-services and individual staffings as needed.

7. Assist individuals in developing natural supports.

8. Model personal responsibility, self-advocacy, and hopefulness via telling of their recovery story, how needs are respectfully met, and how a belief in themselves is maintained.

9. All other duties as assigned.
