Position Overview
The Patient Care Associate provides basic nursing care (i.e. personal and restorative care) to patients according to predefined guidelines, a plan of care established by a Registered Nurse, and under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. The plan of care will utilize the CDC Guidelines for Infection Control as well as the Singing River Health System Departments of Nursing Plan for Provision of Care, Treatment, and Services.

The Patient Care Associate must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. He/She must demonstrate the ability to record observations and activities, to follow oral and written directions/instructions, and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. He/She must demonstrate a willingness and ability to utilize the computer in recording and retrieving data to meet essential job requirements.

Education
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Successful completion of Nurse Assistant/Aide program preferred. A Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) must have successfully completed a CNA program recognized by the State of Mississippi Department of Health.

Certification/s
Complete and maintain BCLS certification.

Experience
Equivalent related work experience or completion of a Nurse Aide program required.

Physical Demands
Work requires physical exertion: Stands, turns, bends, stoops, lifts, climbs and uses many physical motions in performing day-today activities. Auditory acuity to hear verbal communication and gather data using auscultory skills. Manual dexterity of hands and feet to ambulate effectively per scheduled shift (8 or 12 hour as assigned) and effectively manage multiple pieces of equipment/tubes/invasive lines. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and do a great deal of walking without experiencing undue fatigue. Must have high energy level and be capable of handling high pressure situations. May be exposed to communicable disease or radiation. Must demonstrate ability to assist patients in transferring/ambulation; push-pull patients in wheelchair; turn/position bed-bound patients.

Mental Demands
Knowledge of medical terminology preferred. Keen mental faculties/assessment and decision making skills in the management of acute and chronically ill patients. Communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone.

Emotional stability conducive to dealing with high stress level during scheduled shift associated with care of acute patient/SO, rapidly changing patient conditions, emotional demands of patients and families, and demands of maintaining effective working relationships with peers, managers, physicians, and other health care workers.

Special Demands
Must be able to utilize the computer to complete responsibilities - including proficiency in utilizing the electronic medical record.
