Job Description

Shift I: (12:15AM - 8:15AM)

  • Provides care and communicates with patients considering their age and developmental status.
  • Provides assistance with activities of daily living and clinical care, including but not limited to, changing simple dressings, Blood Glucose monitoring via finger stick, taking vital signs, and obtaining 12 EKG.
  • Acknowledges and respect patients' right to privacy while receiving care.
  • Demonstrates respect for patients/families by explaining procedures, and maintaining confidentiality of medical records
  • Prepares patient for examination or procedures by obtaining and recording vital signs
  • Prepares and test equipment for safe operation and transports various equipment and supplies.
  • Reports unusual observations including any change in patient's condition/behavior to professional staff or primary nurse.
  • Ensures safe escort by obtaining handoff report, securing patient care apparatus such as IV tubing and Foley catheter/bag, and providing privacy.
  • Collects and labels specimens at the point of care using two patient identifier.
  • Performs assigned errands including transporting specimens to pathology or other areas
  • Documents appropriate information on designated area of the medical record
  • Adheres to standard infection control precautions
  • Consistently performs hand hygiene before and after patient care/contact
  • Performs blood sampling via venipuncture accordingly to hospital policy
  • Performs finger stick blood glucose measurement and documents outlier codes consistently.
  • Completes assignment in allotted time.
  • Reports to Charge Nurse/primary nurse before leaving assigned area/clinic.
  • Replenished supply inventory as necessary.
  • Reports safety hazard and initiates action to eliminate hazards or refers to R.N.
  • Maintains current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation certification status as per hospital policy
  • Demonstrates knowledge of emergency situations/disaster response.
  • Maintains annual mandatory education; attends scheduled education programs.
  • Conforms to policies governing patient abuse, patient rights, suicide/ligature risk screening.
  • Wears valid Kings County Hospital Center identification card visibly at all times.
  • Observe Department's dress code and use of private phone policy.
  • Provides proper notification for absence/tardiness and confirms to time and leave regulation.
Minimum Qualifications

1. A four-year High School Diploma or its educational equivalent; and,
2. Successful completion of a NYS Department of Health prescribed training program for Phlebotomy, satisfactory to the Laboratory Director and appropriate to the workload of the facility; and,
3. Completion of a facility-based training program in the performance of electrocardiographs and basic life support procedures including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
Note: Effective January 1, 2015, employees performing central service functions, while serving in the Group 12 title of Patient Care Associate (988010), must either possess valid certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) issued by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management or as a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) issued by the Certifying Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution, or be grandfathered. Grandfathering requires that employees provide evidence that they have been employed in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one (1) year occurring between January 1, 2011 and December 31, 2014 and that they have competently performed central service functions during the course of their qualifying experience and will continue to be able to competently perform such functions during the course of their employment at HHC. In addition, these employees will be required to annually complete ten (10) hours of continuing education credits in order to remain qualified to perform central service functions at an HHC facility.

Department Preferences

1. Must be be proficient in the use of an electronic medical record, preferably EPI.

2. A minimum of 1 year experience as a PCA in an acute environment.
