REI Outdoor Programs is a place where people can come and enjoy a day in the great outdoors and learn the skills needed to embark on a new adventure. In this role, you will provide the gear and instruction to REI members and customers for activities which include: Rock Climbing, Kayaking, Stand-Up Paddle boarding, Mountain Biking, Hiking, Backpacking, Camping, Natural History, Outdoor Photography, Navigation Outings for both Map & Compass and GPS, and more. Combine your passion with your work. Responsibilities for this position include:- Successfully lead REI Outdoor Programs outings and classes
- Teach in-store educational classes and in-the-field programs for REI customers to include delivery of class content, customer service during the outing, and the safety of all the participants
- Maintain equipment and coordinate outing logistics
- Coach large groups of people and lead instructional events and give effective feedback to participants
- Knowledge in the course content, demonstrating the designated activity or sport with safety and skill
- Partner with program management teams, market coordinator teams, local business partners as well as local outdoor organizations
- This position reports to the REI Outdoor Programs and Outreach Market Manager

REI Outdoor Programs provides entry-level to intermediate-level guided outings and outdoor education programs. Here are the skills and experience levels we look for in our Outdoor Instructors:- Minimum of 3 years’ experience in outdoor program leadership with experience teaching and/or guiding outdoor programs.
- Required Certification in Wilderness First Aid and CPR
- Experience as a Wilderness First Responder (preferred)
- Applicable certification or equivalent experience in technical outdoor education preferred
- Demonstrated outdoor leadership skills to include excellent teaching and presentation abilities, and planning and organizational skills
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
- Commitment to extraordinary customer service with the ability to effectively resolve difficult customer issues
- Regional knowledge of local outdoor venues and resources is highly desirable
- Knowledge of legal and risk management issues related to outdoor programs
- Valid driver’s license with no negative incidents and ability to acquire commercial driver’s license which includes medical screen and to pass a drug screen
- Computer skills using MS PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and the Internet
