This position is for one Occupational Safety Specialist IV or V , depending on business need and the applicant's qualifications.

Salary Range:

Occupational Safety Specialist IV B22 ($51,614.00 - $84,479.00)

Occupational Safety Specialist V B24 ($59,004.00 - $96,720.00)

General Description

Assists in developing, implementing and monitoring the Department's safety program to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths and financial losses. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Duties

The essential duties for this job include:

Occupations Safety Specialist IV:

  • Advises, coordinates and trains Department personnel in occupational safety and hazardous materials matters; conducts safety needs surveys; reports findings and evaluates follow-up actions.
  • Assists in planning, scheduling and monitoring programs or activities that promote employee safety and accident prevention.
  • Assists in the development and/or review of specifications for the purchase of employee safety and hazardous materials items.
  • Determines and analyzes reported accident frequency rates; maintains and disseminates accident and injury statistical reports.
  • Develops policies, procedures, guidelines and rule interpretations to comply with federal, state and local rules and regulations.
  • Identifies injury types, accident causes and inspects work areas/activities to identify hazards; recommends preventive actions and conducts follow-up investigations.
  • Performs industrial hygiene testing of departmental operations to ensure compliance with safety and hazardous materials regulations and to minimize employee health risks/exposures.
  • Prepares safety and hazardous materials information for publication.
  • Represents the Department in occupational safety matters.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Occupations Safety Specialist V:

All of the above, and:

  • Assists in overseeing the Occupational Safety Section and acts as section director in their absence.
  • May serve as Lead Worker

This job requires the following:

Occupational Safety Specialist IV:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Admin or related discipline
  • Relevant experience may be substituted for education on a year per year basis

Occupational Safety Specialist V:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Safety, Industrial Technology, Business Admin or related discipline
Work Experience

This job requires the following:

Occupational Safety Specialist IV:

  • 5 years in Occupational Safety, Industrial hygiene or related work areas
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent
  • No supervisory experience required.
  • Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Occupational Safety Specialist V:

  • 5 years in Occupational Safety, Industrial hygiene or related work areas
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent
  • No supervisory experience required.
  • Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.


Licenses and Certifications

The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required for this job:

Occupational Safety Specialist IV:

  • Safety Impact Certificate
  • One of the following certifications: National Safety Council ASC, OSHA Outreach Trainer, CSHO, SCTPP, OHST/CHST, SMS, ASP/CSP, or equivalent training and certification as determined by OCC

Occupational Safety Specialist V

  • Safety Impact Certificate
  • Two of the following certifications: National Safety Council ASC, OSHA Outreach Trainer, CSHO, SCTPP, OHST/CHST, SMS, ASP/CSP, or equivalent training and certification as determined by OCC

Other Conditions:

  • This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

Physical Requirements:

  • Sedentary Work: Lift up to 10 lbs. at a time and occasionally carry files / small tools

  • Light Work: Lift up to 20 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs.

  • Standing – Prolonged periods of time

  • Repetitive Motion – substantial movements of the wrist, hands, or fingers

  • Close Visual Acuity Work – work includes data / figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
