All new graduate nurses participate in a special 2-week Graduate Nurse Boot Camp to acclimate to St. Mary’s culture, policies and procedures, healthcare services, and expectations specific to St. Mary’s employees. In addition, each graduate nurse will receive an orientation that is tailored to his/her assigned specialty area.

JOB DESCRIPTION
After evaluation of competency, the Nurse (RN) Graduate is allowed to perform all duties of a nursing assistant as well as other technical skills which have been learned in a nursing education program and for which competency has been previously demonstrated under the supervision of a faculty member. Exceptions include but are not limited to the following: The Nurse Graduate may not administer medication, perform assessments, act in a supervisory position, take verbal orders from the physician or other health care provider, or develop the plan of care. A Registered Nurse is directly responsible at all times for the Nurse Graduate, who is functioning as an unlicensed person with a defined job description. The RN must be physically present in the institution, not, however, providing direct supervision for every activity.
Demonstrates competence in assembling and operating equipment for patient care under the supervision of an RN. Keeps appropriate people aware of pertinent changes or problems in patient condition. Participates in planned education for the patient per Patient/Family Education policy with consideration of developmental differences. Reports variances according to risk management processes of UHS. Maintains confidentiality of patient records and employee information, protecting the rights of the customers served. Obtains and documents vital signs as instructed by RN. Assists with bathing, skin care, dressing, feeding, bed changes, ambulating and transporting of patients.
Supports the organizational initiative of hourly rounding and documenting rounding with a purpose. Maintains and records intake and output with a high degree of accuracy. Supports the organizational initiative of timely response to call lights. Addresses needs and reports to the care giver as appropriate. Demonstrates knowledge in maintaining and recording accurate continuous bladder irrigations. Applies and maintains such treatments as Abduction pillows, braces, ice packs, K-Pads, immobilizers, and SCD. Demonstrates knowledge in maintaining proper body alignment as appropriate for the orthopedic and neurological patient. Demonstrates knowledge of activity precautions for specific orthopedic and neurologic patients. Assists patients with clock void per instructions of RN. This will be evidenced by documentation and verbal report to RN. Assist patients with swallowing difficulties by following guidelines set by speech therapists i.e. chin tuck, thick-it, etc. Responsible for proper collection, labeling and transport of specimens adhering to infection prevention and BSI guidelines. Maintains a clean and organized work area, projecting a professional environment and maximizing the efficiency of the work unit.
Performs other duties as required and assigned.QualificationsGraduation from an accredited Nursing (ADN or BSN) Program Must successfully complete the pre-employment/RN promotion assessment Must demonstrate each task before performing independently Basic computer skills required Must pass licensure examination within 90 days to promote to Registered Nurse. If graduate nurse does not pass within 90 days, s/he is transferred to a Nurse Aide position, and must pass the examination within 5 monthes of graduation to promote to Registered Nurse.
