The Nuclear Safety Analyst position is responsible for leading or assisting in the development and review of safety basis documents such as Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs) and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs) for Hazard Category 2 and 3 nuclear facilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare rule compliant Documented Safety Analyses (DSAs) and Technical Safety Requirements (TSRs) in accordance with DOE-STD-3009 and 10 CFR 830.
  • Provide nuclear facility support for major modifications to existing DOE nuclear facilities and new facilities in accordance with DOE-STD-1189.
  • Provides technical review for all safety analyses and participate in the development of and safety basis documents that support design, construction, and operation of DOE nuclear facilities.
  • Develop and maintain effective lines of communication with facility system, design, and experiment engineers, facility operations, support organizations (radiation protection, quality, fire protection), facility nuclear, criticality safety, and subcontractor personnel, and DOE oversight personnel to provide compliant safety basis analyses.
  • Perform complex and in-depth technical analysis such as radiological and chemical hazard identification and evaluation, atmospheric dispersion modeling and transport, dose consequence analysis to support development of postulated accident scenarios and controls for both unmitigated and mitigated consequence analyses.
  • Identifies DSA commitments and derives TSRs to ensure hazardous and radioactive material releases are mitigated or prevented.
  • Oversee, review, and ensure the preparation of TSR and DSA ensuring revisions accurately reflect the facility configuration and establish the implementable controls.
  • Collaborates with nuclear facility operation which includes reviews of procedures, operational events, and facility modifications and support DSA and TSR implementation.
  • Use of safety software (DOE toolbox codes) to develop data, validate calculations, and provide quantitative risk and consequence analysis.
  • Analyze and identify complex process data for risk, safety, environmental, or reliability concerns and recommend corrective actions when required.
  • Lead, conduct, and evaluate detailed reviews of nuclear operations to identify hazards and develop appropriate controls.
  • Review, from a broad technical perspective, the structures, systems, components, processes, materials, potential energy sources used in facilities, and identify hazards, postulate credible accidents, consider regulatory compliance, and provide solutions (e.g., develop appropriate engineering and/or administrative controls).

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in engineering or other scientific field, with 2 years job-related experience, or advanced degree and 1 years job-related experience in Nuclear Safety & Criticality Safety analysis.
  • Experience performing nuclear safety analysis in a DOE or commercial environment.
  • Experience conducting facility and process hazard analysis, safety analysis and reporting, licensing, and risk assessment, radiological dose assessments, chemical hazards analysis, environmental monitoring and permitting, radionuclide transport modeling, and radiation work planning.
  • Experience performing Natural Phenomena Hazard (NPH) assessments in compliance with DOE standards and orders.
  • This is a multi-level posting and the selected candidate will enter at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • Level 2: BS degree plus 2 years or advanced degree and 1 year.
  • Level 3: BS degree plus 5 years or advanced degree with 3 years.
  • Level 4: BS degree plus 8 years or advanced degree and 5 years.
  • Successful drug screen.
  • Candidate must either possess or be eligible to obtain a US Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.
  • U.S. Citizenship required.
