Amnesty International USA is seeking a National Director of Major Gifts to serve as chief strategist for the organization’s high-value fundraising program and to lead the team in an ambitious growth plan that would increase major gifts income to $15M+ annually from $8M over the next 3-5 years.

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the National Director of Major Gifts is responsible for developing a robust donor advancement system and leading the team to implement it. This system will effectively identify and qualify prospective and diverse high-value supporters and cultivate fruitful, long-term relationships—through meaningful messaging and strategic stewardship and engagement—to secure the highest possible donations for Amnesty International USA’s work.

Over time, the National Director, in conjunction with the Chief Development Officer, will be responsible for re-building an institutional foundations program that supports AIUSA’s work, in addition to the current U.S. foundations that support the our International Secretariat affiliate. The National Director will lead and foster a high-performing and inclusive team, and work in close collaboration with other teams across the organization to ensure that campaign plans, budgets for fundraising and donor engagement opportunities are developed, prioritized, and communicated in an organized and timely manner to supporters. They will also serve on the Development Directors Team along with other key Development managers to oversee and integrate all major aspects of development programs.

Responsibilities

  • Directly line manage the regional Directors of Development, Senior Major Gifts Officer, Stewardship and Grants Specialist and Development Assistant, which includes assisting them in setting ambitious budget goals, short and long-term objectives to achieve goals, KPIs to track performance, oversight through weekly check-ins, and conducting annual performance reviews. Other supervisory skills include: hiring, feedback, coaching, staff development, orientation and training.
  • Provide guidance on expanding and diversifying the universe of major donors, foundations, and international funders through a prospect research system throughout the department. Work in collaboration with Wealth Engine representatives, the data team and development staff to institute this.
  • Personally, manage a portfolio of up to 50 high-value active and prospective major donors and foundations. Collaborate with key staff and the Executive Director to cultivate, solicit and steward major donors.
  • In collaboration with the Major Gifts team, oversee the Executive Director’s portfolio of donors providing strategic guidance in terms of moves management.
  • Provide direction on developing and implementing a stewardship and engagement calendar for the development department. Partner with key programmatic staff and stewardship staff to develop this system, including protocols for messaging and engagement outreach.
  • In collaboration with the key programmatic staff and the Chief Financial Officer, develop a system for integrating departments around key campaign pushes, fundable opportunities, and donor engagement activities.
  • Review and track annual income and expenditure budgets and long-term forecasts for major gifts and over time, foundations. Prepare monthly reports and financial analyses to report to the Chief Development Officer.
  • Partner with international fundraising teams and key global stakeholders, taking a lead role in identifying areas for significant global major gifts growth as well as factors for success that need to be addressed.
  • Work in collaboration with the Director of Direct Response to develop and integrate systems to identify major gifts prospects and advance them from the mid-level donor program as well as other existing channels.
  • In collaboration with the Development Directors Team, develop a vision and direction for the development department. This will include creating and implementing a five-year ambitious growth plan specific to major gifts providing mentorship and guidance to development staff to achieve desired goals.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Requirements

Knowledge and Experience:

  • 10+ years non-profit fundraising experience, particularly with major gifts and foundations.
  • 5+ years management experience.
  • Proven success in leading and growing major gifts income and effectively managing teams toward meeting and exceeding budget goals.
  • Experience in developing, monitoring, and evaluating strategic donor advancement plans, and leading teams to successfully deliver on plans.
  • Experience in personally soliciting and obtaining six- and seven-figure gifts and grants and leading cross-departmental teams in preparing scalable proposals, budgets, and necessary reporting.
  • Experience working with senior management, program staff and board members, and building internal buy-in and support of large-scale fundraising efforts.
  • International fundraising experience a plus.
  • Foundations fundraising experience a plus.
