Motor Equipment Operator I
- Operate a dump truck in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, and supplies.
- Operate concrete truck.
- Operate a light truck in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies, to and from job site.
- Operate a motor truck engaged in snow removal, or sanding of icy streets and roads.
- Operate dump truck, backhoe, and or excavator.
- Able to repair, replace, and perform maintenance of catch basins, manholes, concrete, metal and plastic pipe, asphalt/ concrete pavement, and concrete curb/ gutter ensuring proper methods/techniques are utilized.
- Service and perform minor repairs on automotive equipment include, but not limited to, excavator, frontend loader, and backhoe.
- Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.
- Position also requires a significant amount of work by hand when cleaning drainage structures and doing concrete repairs and forms.
- Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.
- Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.
Pre-employment physical is required.
Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License – Class B (VA or NC).
CDL Hiring Bonus - Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligiible for a $1500 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employement:
- $500 with first paycheck
- $500 first pay period following six month interim eval (with “meets expectation” performance rating)
- $500 at conclusion of probationary period (with “meets expectation” performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:
MINIMUMS:
Requires completion of tenth (10th) grade, plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Must have, or obtain, a current and valid Virginia or North Carolina drivers license in accordance with Virginia or North Carolina DMV drivers license eligibility requirements.
This position requires a Class B Commercial Drivers license.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.
This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.
This is position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

Preferences:
- Possess a High School diploma or GED.
- Experience in operating heavy equipment such as excavator, front end loader, backhoe, etc.
- Experience in methods, materials and equipment utilized in the repair of cave-ins on piped drainage systems, including concrete and asphalt in the right of way.
- Experience in the daily maintenance requirements of heavy equipment.
- Familiarity with Miss Utility processes.
- Possess a valid Escort Vehicle Driver Certification
- Possession of a Tank Vehicle Endorsement
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the required work, particularly excavation safety, and work zone safety practices
- Familiar with VDOT and City Drainage Structure standards and specifications.
- Flagger certified
- CDL - Class A
