Job Purpose: The Mill Operator is responsible for all aspects of the milling process including the supervision and guidance of the mill operators. This position is ultimately responsible for the quality of semolina produced and will contribute to the quality standards through continuous improvement with regards to equipment productivity and finished product characteristics.

Key Accountabilities

  • Facilitate shift to shift communication to be made aware of problems, etc.
  • Report all items of interest to the Mill Superintendent and keep the best interests of Barilla America at hand.
  • Meet with other operators to arrange a schedule for the shift, answer questions, provide feedback, problem solve, etc.
  • Attend weekly miller meetings with Mill Superintendent.
  • Supervise and direct other mill operators in their job duties.
  • Make mill rounds to take care of set-up and arrangement of equipment in order to ensure its proper operation and performance.
  • Demonstrate the ability to read, asses, troubleshoot, and adjust mill flow. In addition a good working understanding of all other flows and flow sheets in the mill.
  • Monitor and regulate production parameters to ensure that controlled process is kept at peak efficiency.
  • Maintain or exceed quality parameters.
  • Guarantee the optimum functioning of cleaning and milling equipment. In particular, guarantee wheat mix uniformity according to mix parameters, optimum wheat humidity and cleanliness conditions, planned levels of scraps and by-products for each cleaning machine.
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate pertinent phases of the mill SW system that relate to this role. This should include but not be limited to entering new lots, set up recipes, set up formulas, start systems, stop systems, understand and prioritize alarms, etc. etc. Included in the alarm phase of this task be able to troubleshoot and understand how to correct present alarm and where the existing alarm correlates to the operation at hand.
  • Follow the weekly mill-run Schedule to insure the mill grinds the wheat requested.
  • Dismantle re-bolt sifters weekly to clean, inspect and replace damaged screens.
  • Log all transfers and mixes of semolina, and reasons for downtime (to lines) when applicable.
  • Comply with the environmental policies and procedures at Barilla Ames facilities including energy efficiency, reduce – re-use – recycle goals, reporting requirements and sustainable initiatives. Complete any environmental tasks as assigned ans report environmental concerns immediately.
  • Follows ISO22000 policies and procedures, address / communicate quality and food safety issues as they occur.
  • Facilitate detailed communication with maintenance personnel. Also work closely with maintenance department on scheduling up-time and PM repairs.
  • Perform maintenance on machinery when possible.
  • Do daily inventories and mill production report on an as needed basis.
  • Work closely with QA and notify the lab of any changes in product quality.
  • Change semolina mix recipes through a computerized process when required.
  • Notify the Mill Superintendent of vitamin inventory status. Maintain inventory of vitamins and keep supplied as needed.
  • Load flour and by-products trucks as needed.
  • Check with Mill Superintendent for any additional assignments.
  • Work and communicate well with others and effectively contribute to the working relationships within Barilla America.
  • Must be able to work flexible shifts / hours during critical periods. While this is a rare circumstance it will occasionally be requested of this individual to provide adequate coverage for all shifts.
  • Must be able to perform any other role in the milling process.

Additional Information

  • A high school diploma or GED is required for this position.
  • Previous work experience in production or food manufacturing and a general working knowledge of computers is preferred.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge is required.
  • Previous experience in a Mill is preferred
  • Ensure compliance and understanding for quality procedures that directly tie to food safety—PRPs, OPRPs, CCPs and FSMA requirements.
