Position Description:

Assists the professional nurse in creating a milieu therapeutic for hospitalized patients with behavioral/emotional disturbance.

Qualifications:

Education / Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

1. Graduate from an approved school with an Associate Degree in Mental Health Technology or two years of college in Psychology or related field.

2. BLS required.

3. Demonstrates proficient interviewing techniques and empathic interactions appropriate to the emotional wellbeing of the patient.

4. Ability to plan and organize work and to work under close supervision. Willingness to accept responsibility for patients and their care when performing designated functions of this position.

5. May be required to rotate shifts and units.

6. Physical requirements:

a. visual acuity of 20/20 or corrected to 20/20 including color vision when applicable;

b. ability to hear (with or without aides);

c. ability to orally communicate;

d. good manual dexterity;

e. ability to push, pull, roll, and transfer/lift 50 pounds occasionally;

f. ability to stand, walk frequently;

g. ability to bend, reach, stoop, kneel frequently;

h. ability to perform CPR; and

i. must be able to physically hold and restrain patients.

Working Conditions:

Working conditions include but are not limited to an environment of high stress where exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious agents, unpleasant odors, limited space, dust and fumes, variations in environmental temperature, hazardous chemicals, loud noise, radiation risk, laser exposure, physically demanding workloads, heavy lifting of at least 30 pounds but often more. Many repetitive activities and motions such as bending, standing and walking for extended periods of time are required. Some risk of verbal, physical and emotional aggression may be experienced.
