POSITION DESCRIPTION
LAB is seeking a Mental Health Provider or School Psychologist to join our Scholar Services Team at Brooklyn Laboratory Charter School, an innovative school serving students in grades 6-12. Our mental health team members play an integral role in ensuring student success through individualized student services and data driven practices that support the social emotional and mental well-being of all students.
Additionally, our mental health team members provide social services and assistance to improve the social and emotional functioning of students and their families in order to maximize academic achievement. Mental health team members prioritize and focus their services on students legally requiring mental health support, but may extend service offerings to any student needing additional support as well. This may include but is not limited to the following core functions:
- Participate in crisis management by implementing protocols, providing counseling and/or making referrals
- Counsel students, parents (in groups and individually) and consult with staff in the development of appropriate behavior goals
- Respond to referrals and/or reported cases from teachers, administrators, other school personnel, parents, students, self, and community agencies such as the Department of Human Services
- Serve as a liaison between students, homes, schools, family services, child guidance clinics, courts, protective services, doctors, and other contacts, to help children who face problems such as disabilities, abuse, or poverty
RESPONSIBILITIES
Student Evaluation and Services
- Support formal assessment for students that helps the LAB team and families to better understand each learner's needs
- Lead on functional behavior assessments and intervention plans to support student needs
- Provide services to students in a variety of settings-one on one counseling sessions, small groups, and implementing curriculums to address student needs and reduce barriers to learning
- Collaborate with school and network team members to determine the services needed for each student, based on their IEP goals and requirements, their personal goals, and other school-based goals for their learning and development
Team Participation
- LAB mental health team members are critical parts of several teams on staff at LAB including the Scholar Services Team, campus staff teams, and culture teams
- Work in collaboration with Scholar Services Team to make team recommendations, complete reevaluations, and conduct long-term planning and vision work for the improvement of services
- Bring expertise with Behavior Intervention Plans, student observation with data collection, and accommodation and intervention
Professional Development
- Engage in the staff learning and growth cycle of feedback at LAB, including surveys and ongoing coaching and development cycles
- Engage in regular professional development as part of a Scholar Services Team to improve services.
- Participate in school-based professional development
- Participate in New York State Department of Education trainings as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
All successful candidates must possess an unwavering belief that all students, regardless of their backgrounds and educational pasts, have the potential to succeed in college or an appropriately rigorous post-secondary outcome. In addition, strong candidates will have
- A bachelor's degree and at least five years of experience working with kids
- Experience achieving outcomes with students
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
