Date revised: 09/2015 GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed. Under the direction of a physician, licensed nurse practitioner, staff pharmacist or Certified Technician Specialist, follows established policies and procedures to perform a variety of routine technical and clerical support tasks that are integral to the operation of the Brigham Medical Specialties Practices. Tasks may include refill of outpatient prescriptions, prior authorizations, assessment for potential drug interactions, and investigational drug services. Tasks will also include responsibilities for technical training, providing direction to pharmacy technician trainees and Registered Pharmacy These tasks are designed to assist the licensed providers in the expeditious refill of medication prescriptions in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Board of Registration in Medicine, Pharmacy, Department of Public For all positions that include direct patient care, indicate with an “X” the age(s) of all patient populations served No Direct Patient Care All age groups Adolescence (13 to 17 years) X PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation. 1. Document all prescription renewal requests from live calls, Patient Gateway requests and voicemail messages on the Watkins Prescription Renewal line 2. Complete prescription renewals for provider signature in electronic health record or other applications as required by Partners Information Systems. 3. Ensure correct pharmacy electronic transfer data are entered for each patient’s renewals. 4. Ensure all prescriptions are refilled in a timely manner. 5. Communicate to providers or their designees when renewals are pending for signature. 6. Obtain prior authorizations for prescriptions as required by payors. Communicate with RNs, Nurse practitioners and physicians as necessary for successful prior authorizations. 7. Utilize Partners Information Systems and computer technologies for the Pharmacy and other hospital departments by printing reports, labels and forms. 8. Develop workflow for prescription renewal process within the Brigham Medical Specialties Hub. 9. Assist department staff to maintain statistics and workload data in the Brigham Medical Specialties Practices. 10. Assist in training of new or existing employees, including call center and clinic support staff as directed. 11. Provide direction and guidance to pharmacy technician trainees, pharmacy externs, and pharmacy interns in following policy and procedure when necessary. 12. Maintain clean and organized work areas. 13. Carry out duties and responsibilities as assigned by pharmacists, Registered Pharmacy Technician III, or Certified Technician Specialist. 14. QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST be realistic, neither overstated nor understated, and related to the essential functions of the job.) 1. High school diploma or equivalent. 2. Must be at least 18 years of age. 3. Successful completion of an accredited Pharmacy technician training program is highly desirable or completed 500 hours of employment as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee. 4. Must be a registered Pharmacy Technician with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy or a registered Pharmacy 5. Must be a Board Certified Pharmacy Technician from a nationally approved technician certification board. 6. Must maintain the title Certified Pharmacy Technician with a nationally recognized certificate from an accredited certifying organization or be a registered Pharmacy Intern with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy. Effective 7. Must complete annual Continuing Education credits as required by the certifying body to maintain Certification. 8. Familiarity with medical terminology, abbreviations and computer technology is required. 9. Must complete annual BWH Pharmacy Technician Competency Assessment Exam. 10. Upon departmental orientation and annually thereafter, must complete annual mandatory training which includes: a. Safety Training - Automated Dispensing Machines 11. Two years previous hospital experience as a Registered Pharmacy Technician or equivalent experience at BWH. 12. Time management and organizational skills to handle multiple tasks under time constraints. 7. Ability to organize and maintain work areas and services efficiently. 8. Ability to make decisions based on knowledge of procedural requirements in conjunction with specific skills and task related functions. 9. Ability to distinguish routine functions from those requiring a pharmacist's professional judgment. 10. Ability to spend most of the work time sitting in order to complete daily tasks. 11. Attend and participate in continuing education as made available or provided by the Department. 12. The ability to read, interpret, and follow complicated verbal and written instructions with accuracy, precision, and dependability. 13. Ability to perform the common mathematical calculations associated with medication doses. 14. Understanding of medical terminology, abbreviations, and computer operations. 15.
