Your Specific Responsibilities:

This is a highly independent professional position responsible for overseeing and providing testing in Virology and Bioterrorism Sections of the Bureau of Public Health Laboratories-Miami. This includes conducting high-complexity testing for a wide variety of infectious agents, including both viral and bacterial agents and biological toxins. This position is primarily responsible for supervising personnel assigned to the Virology Section, including evaluation and scheduling of staff, planning and directing work, approving leave, and having authority for hiring and taking disciplinary action or effectively recommending such actions. Provides training to staff in the performance of diagnostic assays and biosafety procedures. This position is also responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining a quality management system for all testing performed in the section, ensuring adherence to applicable regulatory standards. Maintain inventory of expendable supplies. Review and approve test results. Complete staff time records and perform yearly performance evaluations for direct reports. Perform testing, coordinate workflows, and provide technical support in the Virology Section, including reviewing results and reporting. Participates in all efforts to meet the expected turn-around-time for the section with emphasis on enhanced service whenever possible. Participates in laboratory proficiency testing. Coordinates with other supervisors and staff to ensure successful laboratory operations. Ensures preventative maintenance of instruments is conducted in a timely basis as required by the manufacturer, regulatory authorities, and good laboratory practices.


Conducts risk assessments of new assays and procedures. Designs studies to validate and verify new assays in accordance with applicable regulatory standards. Work with vendors to select and procure new instruments, equipment, and assays. Procures necessary supplies, equipment, reagents, and services as needed and in accordance with state purchasing regulations.


Serves as a subject matter expert for virology testing and coordinates with other organizations and agencies, such as county health departments, hospitals, and reference laboratories, to design, implement, and maintain surveillance systems and testing. Represents BPHL-Miami to external stakeholders and works with customers to ensure needs are being met.


Prepares and present papers of project results as needed. Prepares periodic progress reports of project for the administration.


Performs other laboratory and administrative work as required. Performs related work in the bioterrorism lab when necessary.


A state of Florida Clinical Laboratory Supervisor License is required.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of terminology, principles and techniques used in analysis and testing.

Knowledge of procedures, techniques and equipment used in lab testing and analysis.

Skill in the use of lab equipment.

Ability to communicate effectively.

Ability to work independently.

Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.


Qualifications:

Minimum:

  • Candidate must be eligible for a clinical laboratory supervisor license in either microbiology or molecular pathology
  • Associate's or Bachelor’s degree required
    Preferred:
  • Master's degree
  • 5 years experience
