Position Summary:
To analyze specimens by performing various chemical, microscopic, immunological and other tests used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. To triage and process patient specimens in a timely and accurate manner for individual laboratory testing and referred testing (both intra- and extra system) in accordance with department policies and procedures, regulatory and safety standards and good laboratory practice. To use a customer focused approach with internal and external customers in regard to all supportive activities in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, including registration, billing, troubleshooting, customer response and in resolving order and billing errors.

Qualifications:
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Associate's Degree in Medical Lab Technology or Bachelors in Clinical Lab Sciences.

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Medical Laboratory Scientist (AMT) upon hire or Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) upon hire or Medical Technologist (AMT) upon hire or Medical Technologist (ASCP) upon hire or Medical Laboratory Technician (ASCP) upon hire.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Previous experience with basic principles and functions of instruments/equipment commonly used in the clinical laboratory.

Essential Functions:

    • Performs simple and/or moderately complex chemical, microscopic and immunology analyses according to laboratory procedure and in accordance with manufacturer's guidelines. Utilizes theory and principles of clinical methodology throughout the process.
    • Records, reports and monitors all patient analysis data following proper documentation and procedures. Utilizes knowledge or computer systems as they apply to the laboratory.
    • Performance of phlebotomy using various techniques and tools in a high volume setting while keeping a focus on customer care and addressing any concerns.
    • Performs EKG's following the procedures and guidelines set in place to ensure proper lead placement in order to provide an accurate reading and/or rhythm strip.
    • Performs spirometry and collaborates with the nurse to administer pre and/or post respiratory treatments. Utilizes guidelines to ensure patient follows proper breathing techniques throughout the process.
    • Ensures rapid handling of stat requests to effectively reduce turn-around time of results.
    • Follows protocol for specimen acceptability, utilizing appropriate judgment and policy, identifying problems and interacts with internal and external customers to resolve problems.
    • Ensures that all specimens are organized, maintained and properly stored or discarded according to policy.
    • Records, reports and monitors all QC data in the proper manner.
    • Adheres to quality control programs, knows parameters and purpose of quality control and applies these within individual laboratory standards.
    • Responds courteously and professionally to all inquires in a manner that always seeks understanding of customer needs and reflects positively on the organization.
    • Answers phones and keep records.
    • Properly allocates specimens for add-on tests and communicates to technical areas regarding add-on tests.
    • Works closely with individual laboratories to obtain specimen status when required to ensure proper turnaround time.
    • Serves as a resource for proper ordering of tests.
    • Provides, as much as possible, a single point of contact within the department for answering questions, troubleshooting problems, receiving information with a positive approach.
    • Maintains procedure manual.
    • Perform lab competencies for other clinical staff.
    • Promotes patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participates as requested in safety initiatives.
    • Promotes a safe working environment in the laboratory. Maintains a clean and safe work area. Follows established laboratory safety procedures in accordance with regulatory agencies.
    • Verifies proper billing and patient data through to assure appropriate reimbursement.
    • Works with providers, lab liaison, and charge poster to ensure timely and accurate resolution of errors.
    • Proactively works with management team to troubleshoot and maintain information in all computer systems in use.
    • Works closely with team to investigate pending tests.
    • Performs medical necessity screening and obtains necessary signatures.
    • Prepares specimens according to lab specifications.
    • Accounts for, receives and tracks specimens and test requests.
    • Packages specimens for transport following regulatory agency protocols ensuring safe handling for all parties involved.
    • Use Referral Lab computer (Meditech, Quest, etc.) to order tests and find information.
    • Maintains a proper level of supplies for referral tests. Assesses inventory appropriately.
    • Monitors, prints and distributes reports and results.
    • Maintains printers involved in patient report printing performing preventative maintenance according to schedules or when needed.
    • Maintains daily log for tracking of results.
    • Understands the operation of the pneumatic tube system.
    • Performs temperature checks on temperature controlled devices daily.
