Job Summary Will be responsible for a wide variety of clerical functions, reception, registration, verification of insurance, collection of co-pays, scheduling appointments and follow up, customer service, and answering and screening telephone calls. This position will be interacting with all patients, physicians, referring physicians, and visitors to the Medical Office, as well as throughout MedStar Montgomery Medical Centerl. When needed, will work directly with patients, providing clinical support to the physicians and other licensed providers. Primary Duties and Responsibilities 1. Receptionist Duties: Greets and receives all incoming patients and visitors to the practice. a. Greets and receives patient’s calls in a prompt, professional and courteous manner. b. Answers, screens, and responds to all telephone calls. c. Provides accurate information to patients or visitors and refers non-routine questions to appropriate person or supervisor. d. Daily scanning. e. Coordinates with physicians, MMMC and GUH to facilitate best patient flow. 2. Patient Registration and Scheduling: Performs and facilitates all patient registration and scheduling functions for new patients and follow up appointments. a. Prepares and distributes all necessary registration information to patients for completion. b. Performs data entry of patient information into system c. Verifies accuracy of patient information. d. Schedules all appointments with physician, in accordance with scheduling guidelines. e. Schedules and coordinates follow up appointments with physicians and Hospital f. Provides patient all necessary information for follow up appointments and procedures and treatments. 3. Insurance Verification and Billing: Performs all insurance verification, and collection of co-pay. a. Collects insurance information and verifies coverage prior to visit. b. Verifies and collects co-pays in accordance with patient insurance coverage patients for procedure efficiently and obtains all necessary information for scheduling as well as coordinates with respective staff members. c. Collects fee slips 4. Clinical: Performs the clinical duties for the patients, in accordance with practice standards, following established policies/procedures. a. Greets each patient and family member(s) in a courteous manner. b. Screens patients and documents information accurately in patient charts. c. Escorts patients to the treatment rooms and properly instructs patients and prepares patients with clear instructions for physicians. d. Screens patients, including taking vital signs accurately and documents in accordance with policies. e. Assists Physician in office medical procedures. f. Ensures each patient room is prepared for each visit, to include properly stocked with equipment, chart, and supplies. g. Provides assistance to physicians and medical staff in the treatment procedures. h. Performs correct patient identification for accurate labeling, collection, and processing of laboratory specimens. i. Performs all specimen collection techniques accurately and according to all SOP’s, including verification of correct collection tubes and/or containers. j. Adheres to all safety protocols including standard precautions, transmission-based precautions, and other infection control policies. k. Is able to work efficiently and organize work during heavy workload situations to expedite patient throughput. 5. Development: Maintains current knowledge and develops new knowledge. a. Works with supervisor to identify learning needs and takes actions to address these needs. b. Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by the department. c. Meets all mandatory obligations. 6. Organizational knowledge: Works effectively within and between departments. a. Participates on inter-departmental teams and committees, communicating unit knowledge as appropriate. b. Provides department/unit with information and knowledge acquired during participation with interdepartmental teams and committees. c. Demonstrates a constructive approach during all interactions with staff, supervisors, and managers both inside and outside the unit. 7. Department/Unit Specific Functions and Duties EDUCATION:  High School Diploma or equivalent  Completion of a Medical Assistant program is required CERTIFICATION:  Certified as a Medical Assistant within 6 months upon hire is required REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE:  Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of internal and external customers  Basic Computer skills for data entry  Experience with medical scheduling or billing database  Typing speed: 35 wpm  HIPAA policies on Confidentiality EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:  Minimum 2 years comparable experience in medical setting  Previous experience with patient registration, scheduling and/or billing software  Experience in Oncology preferred AGE SPECIFIC:  No Direct patient care contact.
