Notes to ApplicantsTo meet Austin City Council goals, the Austin Energy Marketing Communications department serves the community by promoting energy efficiency, energy conservation, customer assistance programs, renewable energy, electric vehicle infrastructure, green buildings, sustainability, safety information, customer care information and more to both residential and business audiences.
The Marketing Communications Consultant is part of the in-house marketing strategy team and will be responsible for creative and strategic marketing account management, which includes the following:
Considering the diversity and inclusion needs of our customers to achieve equitable access to Austin Energy messaging and resources.
Managing advertising and promotions process as well as coordinating creative and messaging recommendations for external marketing and communications initiatives.
Acting as strategic and creative marketing liaison and consultant with cross-functional internal stakeholder teams with follow-up and follow-through and professional guidance to ensure marketing projects adhere to Austin Energy branding. Includes giving professional presentations.
Converting technical copy into branded, digestible, inclusive and customer-friendly messaging that prompts action. Writing for multiple channels and deliverables.
Strategic planning and managing projects that include video and animation-based commercials, working with videography and design professionals to deliver commercials for paid media.
Working with the market research team to leverage data analytics and market research to inform marketing decisions and work.
Aligning messaging and marketing channels to meet the needs of different audiences.
Does not create graphic design, but works with staff graphic designers, web developers and other team members to create effective collateral and other marketing materials and tools.
Researching and facilitating the most cost-effective and appropriately targeted options for reaching goals, including community and business relations opportunities.
Following City of Austin Purchasing guidelines in preparing requisitions and bids, and following departmental processes.

Preferred Qualifications
Branding – Experience in the management of brand consistency for all internal and outbound communications. Ability to act as gatekeeper of Austin Energy brand, and consult on guidelines for branding in advertising, promotions, internal publications, message development, marketing and social media communications.
Consulting – Experience in collaborating with internal stakeholders in a matrixed organization, including program managers, engineers, architects, web teams, public information officers, data experts, executives/management and graphic artists to advise the organization on effective marketing communications that advance organizational goals and benefit external customers.
Analytics and Market segmentation – Strong research and analytical experience in applying trend data and measuring media analytics including paid and owned. Knowledge of market segmentation, media markets, developing metrics and reporting on marketing campaign results and effectiveness. Experience using audience demographics and psychographics to build personas and influence the development of integrated communications strategies and tactics for diverse audiences. Familiarity with Tableau and Google Analytics desired.
Marketing project management – The ability to independently manage multiple marketing priorities and details to implement adopted marketing strategies in a detailed, deadline-driven and changing environment. PMP-certification a plus.
Customer-focused writing and campaign development – Demonstrated ability to develop campaign messaging platforms (messaging, voice). Experience in developing/writing customer-friendly messaging based on research, customer data, compelling marketing writing best practices and diversity considerations. Experience in the strategic development of creative marketing campaigns, including research-based concepting and creative consultation with designers for projects launching in multiple media and owned channels.
Marketing process – Experience in adhering to and consulting on established organizational processes, especially to contribute to efficient marketing workflow, marketing planning and working with graphic design team to maximize accountability and positive outcomes.
Experience working in marketing for an energy provider or energy utility, or for an agency supporting energy or energy utility stakeholders.
