Associate's degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Observers conduct onboard and alternative platform observations of commercial gillnet trips to collect fisheries dependent data. The data collected by the observer program informs adaptive management decisions used to mitigate endangered species interactions in the state’s gill net fishery. In addition, the data are used in stock assessments and to monitor bycatch and effort in many of the other state fisheries. Observers collect biological data (i.e. length, weight, species, etc.), fisheries effort data, record and proof data collected by the observer program, use appropriate protocols to handle sea turtles and other protected species, and communicate effectively with fishermen and other members of the public. Observers are provided excellent training, gain extensive field experience, and will have the opportunity to participate in other division sampling programs. The observer will trailer and operate boats on a regular basis, possibly in inclement weather, travel frequently for day trips and overnight trips, and work both as a member of a dynamic team and independently.
