Manager, Sustaining Engineering
The Manager, Sustaining Engineering will lead a skilled group of cross-functional team members on existing products, services, or processes. She/He will focus on problem-solving, driving continuous improvement, and developing innovative technologies. Their overall objective will be to ensure optimal yield, cost, capacity, and efficiency while enabling new technology development and transfer. Direct reports = 5 – 15.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for managing a team of highly motivated product development engineers tasked with the development of components, mechanisms, subsystems that meet or exceed the expectations of internal and external stakeholders.
- Provide direction to the team to guide the product and technology decisions for our electromechanical and robotics-based products to assure our solutions deliver quality and value for our customers.
- Develop and execute test plans to validate mechanical/electrical system performance.
- Participate in design reviews and failure modes and effect analysis (FMEA) events to identify high-risk areas to improve.
- Participate in root cause analysis (RCA) efforts and define creative and effective corrective and preventive actions to improve designs, processes, and people.
- Establish and maintain design and development processes to assure they comply with the documented procedures defined within our Quality Management System as well as ISO and FDA requirements.
- Build and maintain a strong team environment within the Engineering team as well as creating an environment of deep collaboration between the development team and the product management, marketing, and other functional departments/teams.
- Responsible for proactively managing the resource needs as well as the capacity and competency gaps to assure that there is a highly capable engineering product development team in place.
- Define process and people improvement opportunities and implement specific corrective actions/assignments to continuously improve the team.
- Willing to travel to domestic and international off-site locations as necessary to directly support customers, and evaluate field issues.
Required Knowledge and Skills
- Functional management experience including managing a group of direct reports and being able to build a high-performing team.
- Cross-functional experience; works well with other departments, especially with Marketing, software engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams.
- Experience in the design/development of safe and effective systems including single and multiple fault-tolerant system designs that meet UL, CE, and FDA regulatory standards.
- Experience in applying systems engineering frameworks and product development best practices including Design for Manufacturing (DFM), GD&T, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methodologies during the design, verification, and validation.
- Experience with Bill of Materials, MRP systems, Change Management (ECR, ECO), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), and CAPA tools/processes.
- Familiar with utilizing Design of Experiments (DOE) methodologies to effectively solve product and process-related issues.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills to understand system interfaces and to quickly analyze, troubleshoot, and determine the root cause of issues
- Self-starter, capable of working independently as well as building strong cross-functional collaborative relationships and a sense of ownership & urgency with projects and work assignments.
- The candidate must be highly motivated to work in a fast-paced, team-based environment.
- Presentation skills with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite of Products.
Basic Qualifications
- BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electronic Engineering
- Minimum 10 years Mechanical Engineering experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Electronic Engineering, or Engineering Management
- A hands-on technical leader and device subject matter expert.
- Experience in the development of technologies implementing automation solutions for the pharmacy, nursing, and hospital sectors of the healthcare industry.
- Experience with manufacturing processes and tools including MRPs, GMPs, Process Flow Analysis, DfM, COGs reduction, and design transfer requirements/methodologies.
- Experience with DOE tools/methods to assist in debugging, identifying high-risk areas as well as streamlining product development.
- Experience with test processes/methodologies including verification, validation, qualification, acceptance, reliability, HALT and HASS testing,
- Familiarity with Agile PLM, AutoCad, Solid Works, and Labview
- Working experience with FDA regulated, ISO13485, or other highly regulated environments
