Job SummaryServes as the Manager for the MedStar Specialty Pharmacy, and represents the Pharmacy on the Quality Management Committee; stays abreast of all pharmacy laws and regulations, and ensures that all staff members practice within the state and federal laws that govern the practice of pharmacy; ensures that the pharmacy meets all accreditation requirements; Works within and provides oversight of the prescription filling and dispensing center of the Specialty Pharmacy program and ensures all medication orders are processed and shipped accurately while maintaining proper storage requirements and cold chain integrity. Provides day-to-day management of pharmacy operations, including performance management of assigned team members, and problem resolution. All associates are accountable for their role in meeting patient experience standards. Minimum QualificationsEducation/TrainingBachelor’s degree from an accredited School of Pharmacy required. Experience5 years pharmacy experience in a retail, mail order, or Specialty setting required; Specialty setting preferred; 2 years management experience in pharmacy required. License/Certification/RegistrationCurrent Maryland and DC Pharmacist license, including Immunization/Vaccination Certification and registration with the board of pharmacy in both states / districts; willingness to obtain other state licensure as business needs require. Specialty Pharmacy Board Certification preferred. Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesExcellent verbal and written communication skills, strong customer service skills, and strong leadership skills required. Must demonstrate critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as sound judgement and decision-making abilities. Adept at managing financial and human resources. Must be highly productive; organized; and comfortable engaging with patients, family members, and healthcare providers. Adept at building trust and relationships. Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards, and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations, and state and federal pharmacy regulations.
  • Participates in the selection, orientation, and training of new team members, and in the ongoing training and development of existing team members, fostering an environment of continuous learning.
  • Provides coaching, performance management and evaluations of a team of licensed pharmacists, registered technicians, and other support personnel. Creates, delivers and monitors corrective actions and performance improvement plans; ensures all personnel are properly registered and licensed with the Board of Pharmacy.
  • Implements, monitors, and reinforces MedStar Specialty Pharmacy’s policies and procedures. Recommends new or modified policies and procedures to reduce cost and/or improve quality, safety, or performance. Assists with obtaining and maintaining pharmacy accreditations.
  • Oversees inventory management and ensures completion of tasks; supervises the purchasing function to reduce cost of goods sold.
  • Complies with all loss prevention and security procedures for inventory and performs initial investigation of any discrepancies. Maintains all records of all transactions of the pharmacy necessary to ensure accurate control over and accountability for all drugs as required by applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations.
  • Performs all duties of a Pharmacist: evaluates prescriptions for appropriateness of dose, therapeutic efficacy, allergy, drug interactions, and contraindications; performs final check on all completed prescriptions, verifying the accuracy of input, labeling, and dispensing; provides patient counseling; and provides clinical information and guidance to physicians and other health professionals.
  • Manages daily pharmacy operations by directing workflow patterns, delegating assignments, and providing oversight of the dispensing process to ensure that all medication orders are processed accurately and promptly. Assumes full legal responsibility for the operation of the pharmacy in a manner that complies with all the applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Provides oversight of the shipping and delivery process to ensure that all medication orders are stored, handled, and shipped appropriately while maintaining proper storage requirements and cold chain integrity.
  • Provides management level intervention as needed for daily issues and problems requiring interaction between pharmacy staff and customers (physicians, liaisons, patients, and vendors).
  • Collaborates with Executive Director and Specialty Program Director to ensure that MedStar’s Specialty / Central Pharmacy is achieving optimal outcomes in the areas of patient experience, quality and safety, growth and finance, best place to work and overall operational excellence.
  • Assists Executive Director and Specialty Program Director with any pharmacy licensing and credentialing and third party and government audits.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi-disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
