Position: Maintenance Assistant

Location: Y-Haven

Area of Focus: Floor Maintenance (Strip, Wax, Buff) and Painting projects.

Pay Rate: $10.80 - $12.00 per hour

Hours: Full-Time (40 Hours per week)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible for assisting the maintenance department with timely and complete preventative maintenance for assigned buildings and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to identify, troubleshoot and repair minor plumbing and electrical issues including but not limited to:
    • Replace bulbs and ballasts in light fixtures
    • Repair leaking sinks and toilets
  • The ability to complete minor repairs to various equipment and facilities to ensure ongoing operations of a facility.
  • Ability to scrub, strip, wax and buff floors.
  • The ability to inspect equipment and systems for preventive maintenance reasons.
  • Clean and maintain indoor and outdoor areas of a building, such as restrooms, lobby and hallway floors, windows and grounds. These duties might include but not limited to mopping and waxing floors, washing windows, clipping shrubs, snow and debris removal and painting exterior or interior walls and structures as needed.
  • Ability to move furniture and equipment up to 100 lbs without assistance. Also able to move equipment up to 200lbs with assistance and to follow safety guidelines pertaining to lifting, pushing and pulling heavy objects as described by OSHA.
  • Use and maintain assigned power equipment and hand tools: buffers, auto scrubbers, extractors, high pressure washers, high speed buffers etc.
  • Keep inventory of maintenance and cleaning supplies and equipment, and report needs to supervisor
  • Complete administrative duties, such as filling out forms and reporting maintenance statuses to supervisor
  • Complete other assignments as assigned.
  • Responsible for following the child abuse and neglect reporting process including completion of Suspected Child Abuse/Neglect reporting form, calling children protective services (696-Kids) and notifying your immediate Supervisor, Branch Executive, Risk Management and Human Resources Department (s). All employees of the YMCA of Greater Cleveland are mandated reporters for any signs or suspicion of child abuse and neglect.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

  • High School diploma or GED preferred.

Experience:

  • One-year experience in general maintenance and/or custodial work in commercial buildings/facilities.

Certification(s) Requirements:

  • CPR and First Aid certification and Safety training required within 90 days of hire.
  • YMCA Maintenance Technician or equivalent certification a plus.
  • Custodial/ General Maintenance Helper certification preferred

Technical Skills and Knowledge:

  • Ability to read and understand OSHA standards.
  • Knowledge and ability to use equipment, materials and supplies used in building maintenance.
  • Substantial experience in carpentry, painting, electrical, plumbing, HVAC systems, general building systems and related areas a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineered blueprints.
  • Ability to read and write and understand written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to view/enter data using Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and other manuals and documents
  • Ability to work in a team and follow instructions from supervisors

  • Ability to work effectively work with people of different backgrounds, abilities, opinions and perceptions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequent amount of sitting, standing and walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, bending and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds for extended periods of time. Lifting requirement of the position may be greater depending on the particular job to be performed.
  • Must be able to work on a ladder up to 6 ft in and outside of the facilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • May be required to work outside and on occasion may encounter inclement weather.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids.
