Multiple Literacy Support Specialist jobs are available with the City of Fort Worth. These are part-time, temporary Literacy Support Specialists positions to provide support to its 100x25 Reading Instruction Program, launched during the summer of 2019. These persons will work up to 19 hours weekly at designated Community Center. The Reading Instruction Program is embedded in Summer Day Camp and serves children ages 5 -13. Expected duration for the 2021 Summer Day Camp is June 28 through August 6. The Reading Instruction Program is managed by the Community Center Supervisor.

Fundamentally, the Reading Instruction Program is built on direct instruction of a minimum of 45 minutes daily focused on the six (6) best practices of reading instruction. These six (6) best practices are: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, writing, comprehension and vocabulary and oral language development.


The Literacy Support Specialists job responsibilities include:

  • Teach scheduled reading instruction classes and participates in other activities to further educational programming for appropriate age group.
  • Plan courses content and method of presentation, prepare outline of materials to be covered, and submit it for approval for facility supervisor/coordinator.
  • Select and assembles materials to be used in teaching assignments and arrange use of audiovisual equipment or teaching aids.
  • Conduct workshops or field trips for participants and plan and direct activities associated with projects.
  • Monitor, collect, track and verify accurate records for reporting purposes.
  • Monitor and evaluate the quality, responsiveness, efficiency, and effectiveness of assigned programs, methods, and procedures; and work with personnel on the continuous improvement of programs and services.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED and six (6) months teaching experience in specialty area (reading instruction, early learning, elementary education).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Some college preferred (at least 60-semester hours).
  • At least three (3) years of classroom experience.
  • Strong literacy instruction background.
  • Experience working with younger elementary students (K-2nd).
  • Experience working with older elementary students is beneficial (3rd-5th).
  • Knowledge and experience in ESL.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Preference given to current or retired certified Texas teachers.

Note: Due to COVID19, the Summer Day Camp (SDC) Program may be affected, and these positions are dependent on having the program. If Summer Day Camp is adversely affected, there will be no "Reading Instruction Program".
