UPMC Somerset is hiring a Full Time Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) (Union) to support the Nursing 3B Medical/Surgical unit in Somerset, PA!
The schedule for this position will be 3 12-hour shifts rotating 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. This position will rotate coverage every other weekend.

Sign-On Bonus Details (Full Time or Flex Full Time status)
- $7,500 Sign-on Bonus available for nurses with over one year of experience (with a 2-year work commitment)
- $5,000 Sign-on Bonus available for Graduate Nurses and nurses with less than one year of experience (with a 2-year work commitment)
Purpose:
Under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse assists with the plan of care, assesses, implements and evaluates patient care with assigned area.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluates patient care needs with coordination of the Registered Nurse.
- This includes a comprehensive patient assessment (e.g. respiratory status, vital signs, cardiac status, GI status) and evaluation of basic and emergency patient care needs
- Assesses patient problems and prioritizes needs.
- This includes critical thinking that permits the differentiation of significant versus non-significant deviations from normal as well as differentiating urgent versus non-urgent deviations from normal
- Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of a plan of care for assigned patients in accordance with the individualized plan of care
- Distributes medication according to the five rights of medication administration and performing treatments/procedures as identified in the medical plan
- Initiates and maintains peripheral IV administration including maintenance fluid administration within Commonwealth of Pennsylvania regulations and hospital standards
- Initiates patient and family education under the supervision of an RN
- Reads and interprets standards of care to efficiently provide patient care
- Maintains competence in performance of routine nursing procedures
- Maintains a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that promotes positive internal (e.g. co-workers, physicians, ancillary personnel) and external, (visitors) relationships
- Participates in formal, and informal staff development activities, both on and off the nursing unit
- Identifies strategies to improve flow of work and cost providing care
- Non-essential functions: Participates in development of standards of care, and quality improvement activities, Participates in orientation of new personnel, Participates in quality improvement processes
- Non-permitted functions: acceptance of verbal and telephone orders, administration of IV push medication, Titration of any medicated intravenous fluid, with the exception of standard IV solutions containing potassium chloride, independent care planning, administration of chemotherapy agents, administration of total parenteral nutrition, administration of blood and blood products, accessing implanted intravenous ports, z-track injections, care of pediatric patients, insertion of NG tubes, endotracheal or tracheostomy tubs suctioning or general care
Qualifications
Required for all positions in addition to specialty requirements and preferences:
- Licensed or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
- Basic Cardiac Life Support Provider current, or completed within one month of hire
- Successful completion of an approved pharmacology course prior to hire
- Criminal Background check
- Child Abuse History Clearance
- FBI Fingerprint Clearance
- Excellent Interpersonal Skills
- Excellent oral and written communication
- SAFE training on Behavioral Health Unit (if applicable)
Preferred:
- Previous acute care experience
- Inpatient Hospice only: previous hospice experience preferred
- Behavioral Health Unit only: previous BH unit experience preferred
Specialty Area Requirements: (these requirements are in addition to those listed above)
- Required: one year general medical/surgical experience in an acute care setting, successful completion of a basic cardiac dysrhythmia course within 6 months of hire
- Preferred: previous same day surgery experience
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
- Basic Cardiac Life Support Provider upon hire or completed within one month of hire
- Successful completion of an approved pharmacology course prior to hire
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
- National Institute of Health Stroke Scale Certification
- Act 34
