DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSPublic libraries are trusted community and cultural centers that serve a highly diverse populace. The Houston Public Library (HPL) seeks a passionate, Librarian II to coordinate virtual program content creation. Successful candidates will work closely with the community and other library divisions to design engaging programs that align with the vision of Systemwide Programming, communicate effectively, provide exceptional internal and external customer service, and enjoy working with, learning and teaching new and emerging technologies, be at ease multitasking in a fast-paced public service setting and enjoy interacting with people of all ages from diverse backgrounds.
Essential job duties and responsibilities for a Librarian II include:
  • Lead, inspire, and motivate the virtual content creation team.
  • Plan, coordinate, develop, and deliver programming in the library for all ages through recorded virtual programs, live virtual programs, and in-person programs;
  • Create scripts, film, edit, and produce virtual content for social media platforms;
  • Train staff on virtual creation, editing, and producing content;
  • Work with Systemwide Programming to ensure that programs meet system needs.
  • Work with community members and partners to develop programs based on community needs;
  • Promote and assist with innovative library services and programming; and
  • May need to work evenings and weekends as needed (Saturday and Sunday).

  • Provide exceptional customer service;
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing; and
  • Bilingual skills are a plus

WORKING CONDITIONS

There are no major sources of discomfort, i.e., essentially normal office environment with acceptable lighting, temperature and air conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATIONAL/ EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Master’s of Library Science degree from a school accredited by American Library Association (ALA) and one (1) year of library experience.

OR

Requires a Bachelor’s degree plus 18 hours toward a Master’s of Library Science degree from a school accredited by ALA and two (2) years of library experience. A Master’s of Library Science degree must be completed within two (2) years from being hired into this classification

Preference will be given to applicants with:
  • Proficient computer skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Zoom;
  • Knowledge of video equipment for filming, editing, and producing virtual programs
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate with others;
