About the Position

In this role, you'll be responsible for providing specialized secretarial support to attorneys by preparing and filing legal documents such as pleadings, petitions, briefs, correspondence, motions, and other legal documents.

Position Qualifications

Education
  • High school diploma or GED

Experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in a legal setting with knowledge of legal documents and proceedings

OR
  • Post-secondary education may substitute for one (1) year of the required experience.

Other Requirements
  • NOTE: The Maricopa County Attorney's Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs.
  • Drug testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and before placement.

Our Preferred Candidate has
  • Experience working within a County Attorney's Office
  • Experience working in a public or private law firm as a legal secretary
  • Certificate of completion from an accredited secretarial school or certificate of completion from a legal secretary training program

Essential Job Tasks

The tasks listed are a representation and not an all-inclusive list of essential job tasks for this position.

  • Assists with the preparation and filing of correspondence, legal documents, and briefs from hard copy, oral, or mechanical dictation on a personal computer
  • Types and prepares complaints, indictments, and related charging documents
  • Files documents with the court
  • Creates and maintains case files
  • Enters and retrieves case information from various databases
  • Utilizes external databases to access and retrieve criminal history and case information
  • Pulls case files for court calendars
  • Photocopies or scans discovery, adult probation packets, and other documents/materials
  • Redacts documents for disclosure/discovery
  • Schedules interviews with victims and witnesses
  • Retrieves and distributes electronic pleadings and minute entries

Working Conditions
Office setting in high-volume, fast-paced environment with frequent stressful situations. It requires long periods of sitting while completing computer activities and related tasks. Ability to move up to 20 pounds floor to waist and pushing/pulling up to 20 pounds a distance of up to 100 feet.

Selection Procedure

The Maricopa County Human Resources Department reserves the right to admit to the selection process only those candidates considered to be the most highly qualified. Those selected will be assessed based on evaluation of listed education and experience. The hiring authority will interview and select the successful candidate from a list provided by Human Resources.

All offers of employment made to new hires and rehires at Maricopa County are contingent upon successful completion of a post-offer, pre-employment thorough background investigation. A background investigation is conducted on a current employee who changes to a Safety Sensitive Position or one having the potential for serious adverse impact on the integrity or efficiency of the County. These requirements do not pertain to employees of elected officials who undergo background investigation processes administered through their respective offices.

Typically, successful candidates are hired at a salary rate up to midpoint of the range, based on applicable experience, internal equity, and budgetary allowances.
