About the Position:

Note: Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.

Perform installation access, usage of physical access control equipment and visitor access on military installations. Safeguard Government personnel, information, operations, and critical assets in accordance with a wide variety of Federal rules and agency/local regulations/policies.


Responsibilities
  • Prevent unauthorized access to limited and exclusion areas.
  • Conduct security checks at regular intervals including inside perimeter checks of facilities and checking of doors, locks, and vents.
  • Distribute and prioritize workload for a team of security guards.
  • Prepare and conduct security force pre-shift briefing and guard mount training.
  • Provide instructions and directions regarding security forces policies, procedures, and access requirements.
  • Enforce facility access control of personnel and visitors using appropriate regulations and procedures.

    • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
    • Incumbent must be able to meet conditions of employment as stated in AR 190-56.
    • IAW AR 600-85, a DA Form 5019 Condition of Employment must be assigned for mandatory drug testing. Drug testing designated position. Individual agrees to submit to a urinalysis on a recurring basis, in accordance with AR 600-85.
    • Incumbent must wear the Department of the Army Security Guard (DASG) uniform IAW AR 190-56, maintain a high state of appearance and hygiene.
    • Shift work is required, or a change in work shift may be necessary.
    • Hours of work encompass fluctuating tours of duty to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Overtime may be required as directed and is subject to recall for periods of emergency overtime.
    • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain state certification for operating the NCIC terminals IAW AR 190-56, requirements of Individual Reliability Program apply.
    • This position requires the selectee to qualify annually for the Individual Reliability Program (IRP) as explained in IAW 190-56, Chapter 3.
    • This position is subject to the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
    • Incumbent must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually thereafter in the use of assigned firearms/weapons.
    • Incumbent must undergo and pass annual medical exams of physical, emotional and mental stability.
    • Incumbent must successfully complete security guard training.
    • Incumbent must successfully complete CPR certification and First Aid training.
    • Incumbent may be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
    • Incumbent will be required to pass entry level and annual re-certification of standard Physical Agility Test (PAT).
    • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.     Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience controlling access of vehicles, visitors and pedestrians into military installations; experience using automated systems to query and verify suitability for visitor entry into military installations; experience monitoring security systems; experience patrolling and ensuring the physical security of assigned areas; maintaining liaison with emergency services; and instructing or advising security personnel on specific access control operational tasks and job techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Services or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. Examples of experience, such as work with a Federal, State, municipal, local, or private protective organization that involved the protection of property against such hazards as fire, theft, damage, accident, or trespass; or maintaining order and protecting life. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone - no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
